Angelique étoile (アンジェリーク エトワール, étoile meaning "star" in French) is considered the fourth main installment of the Angelique series. Its PlayStation 2 port is one of the projects made for Neoromance's tenth anniversary. It is the first game in the series to not provide Angelique as the default name for the protagonist.

Yuki Hori and Mami Matsushita are the producers; Kazuyuki Nakasa is the director. Midori Kusanada is the scenario director. Nobumasa Takagi composed the music.

The Premium Box edition of the PS2 includes a collector's plate, character message CD, scarf, and greeting cards, while early Windows version purchasers receive an illustrated box sleeve.

Plot[]

A high school girl, born in the Sacred Bird Cosmos, is sent on a field trip to Holy Land. She encounters a mystical stone slab and is revealed as the legendary étoile, a celestial messenger, to help nurture the Sacred Beast Cosmos's growth.

Gameplay[]

General[]

The player can customize their protagonist's birthday, bloodtype, and entrance sequence to alter Intimacy ratings with romanceable characters, and freely move between Sacred Bird, Arcadia, and Beast Cosmos.

Main story events advance only when the player focuses on the cosmos. The general gameflow for completing the main storyline is a repeated cycle of steps:

  1. Receive Sacrea from Sacred Guardians.
  2. Distribute Sacrea to Sacred Beast Cosmos until a planet's culture develops.
  3. Pacify the Sacrea Spirit which emerges.
  4. Visit the Guardians-to-be three times and convince them to come to Holy Land.

To achieve a good default ending and romance every character, players must repeat the recruiting cycle nine times. Traveling between planets in the Sacred Beast Cosmos requires the protagonist to board the Flying Ship, Aurora. Legendary Energy is needed to collect Sacrea from guardians, which can be stored in her bracelet. Cultivation begins when the protagonist unleashes the Sacrea at the correct location. Players can earn a maximum 12 ★ by recruiting the Sacred Guardians. Sacrea Spirits can be challenged by visiting Rachel during weekdays and selecting the "Trial" option. High Intimacy ratings can lead to a special finishing blow called "Romantic Wave".

Sacred Beast guardian candidates require the same cost and time as Trials to be convinced. Players must visit Rachel or Rosalia to see them and negotiate with them. The protagonist can restore her lordary energy by retiring to her room, checking inventory, and reviewing the game's encyclopedia. She must give a progress report to Rachel every Saturday, which will pay her a default 1,000 Gold salary. Rachel's payments are the only reliable method of receiving Gold, which is needed for shopping at Celestia or another planet's shop. The game has three different endings, and players can ignore or fulfill the main story objectives as they please.

Character Routes[]

Romance with 19 characters, including Sacred Guardians for cosmoses and Arios, requires having at least 2 unused guardians and visiting Rachel on Fridays. Intimacy and Affinity affect a character's affections, with Lovelove Flash and 'étoile' increasing the opportunities for boosting Intimacy between male characters and the protagonist.

  • 1 point increase each day the protagonist visits a guardian within his office. Growth can occur even on their break days in the weekend.
  • 1~5 points for every time the protagonist chooses to "Talk" (お話, 1 ★). Talking can be done even after receiving a guardian's Sacrea.
  • 2~10 point boost for agreeing to weekday dates. These instances are restricted to chats on the Aurora with limited text options. Dates automatically drain the protagonist's energy and cancels her chances to explore any area for the day.
  • 2~10 point increase for celebrating a guardian's birthday. The protagonist must be within the Sacred Beast Cosmos at the start of the day. She can choose to sing for him or give a present. Birthday wishes cost no energy to activate and do not cancel her plans.
  • 2~10 points for writing/agreeing to a Sunday date invitation and keeping true to the promise. Intimacy drops if both participants agree to the date but the protagonist fails to meet it. Invitations are sent only if the protagonist has the character's mail address. Guardians give their address once he reaches at least 70 Intimacy with her.
  • 2~10 points for inviting a guardian to a Sunday date at their office (2 ★). Like previous titles, a male character may reject her thereby negating any boosts.
  • 2~10 point increase for a Sunday date to chat in her room. She can supplement their conversation with a beverage of his preference. The protagonist can earn recipes for serving different drinks by visiting the female characters on the weekend or by attending the Queen's tea parties.
  • 2~10 points for arranging a date at Celestia and waiting for guardian at the start of the day.

Mail responses arrive when the protagonist sleeps in her room at the Sacred Beast Cosmos. Intimacy can drop if the protagonist ignores a guardian or states displeasing answers. Celestia dates are the best method for changing Intimacy, taking the whole day and allowing the couple to explore an entertainment area. Each character has a special date gift or recipe if their favorite spot is explored with high Intimacy. The Heart Gauge, located above the text box, reflects the player's response affecting Intimacy. Dates usually end after visiting two locations, but filling it to highlight the heart icon can extend the date. The protagonist's order can affect the date's reaction. Filling the Heart Gauge twice in a single date unlocks a male character's personal romance event at Midnight, allowing them to earn two different Confession endings.

This game was one of the playable titles available at Koei's Tokyo Game Show 2004 booth.

Satelight animated a two-cour 25 episode TV animated adaptation called Koisuru Tenshi Angelique. The first season's subtitle is ~Kokoro no Mezameru Toki~; ~Kagayaki no Ashita~ is the second season's subtitle. The TV series's narrative roughly covers the game's main plot yet takes several liberties with character relationships and events. Every character received a redesign for the anime. Infinite Love and Dearest You were the opening and endings songs. ~Kagayaki no Ashita~ had Doukoku no Ame and Yakusoku no Chi he.

A web radio program, Koisuru Tenshi Angelique ~Sweet ♥ Paradise~, was broadcast simultaneously. Kenyu Horiuchi (Oscar) and Daisuke Namikawa (Heyue) acted as the MCs. The compilation CDs for the program make a fraction of the anime only merchandise.

Koei published four panel comics anthologies, including four panel comics anthologies, longer stories in the Angelique Blanche series, and a fortune book featuring characters from Neoromance Tsushin Cure!, with illustrations by Shinko Katsurasaki.

étoile has been used to represent the Angelique series in Neoromance stage events and merchandise since its conception. Characters from this IP crossover into other character image songs in a CD called Neoromance Friends. Three étoile character image songs were included in the first Neoromance Christmas CD, ~Seiya ni Love Song wo~. Neoromance ♥ Festa Alamode 4 had Horiuchi (Oscar) record an exclusive character monologue and image song for its event CD, Neo Romance Ondo.

The my GAMECITY social game based its Angelique universe on this entry. The Neoromance Jewelry series is based on the trois and étoile incarnations of the cast. Members of Koei's Fanclub can often purchase desserts and holiday character messages dedicated to these characters. Here is a list of recent campaigns which used Angelique étoile:
