Aramitama (荒魂; literally "brazen soul" or "uncultured spirit") is a Shintoism concept regarding a deity's state of mind. This belief refers to a deity's harsh and frequently cruel behavior. When a deity is within this state, they will desire havoc and decay to anything within their reach. The balance between Heaven and earth tips towards chaos, sickness becomes rampant, and people will never know rest.

Deities favor Aramitama for various reasons, including neglect, curses, environmental changes, conflicts, or the deity's unpredictable nature. This concept is connected to Nigimitama, a deity's nurturing side, which grants blessings and watch over inhabitants. In essence, Aramitama creates and changes the world, while Nigimitama brings kindness and nourishment. This concept was important in medieval festivals and religious shrines, and Shintoism believes these principles can apply to individuals. The terms are similar to the yin-yang philosophy.

Role in Game[]

Deities in their Aramitama state act as "the monsters" who attack the party in Harukanaru Toki no Naka de 4, taking the place of vengeful spirits commonly found throughout the series. Normally deities are content to watch people from afar and rarely left their dwelling. However, when the Black Dragon awakened within the parallel world, it coated the land with defilements and curses. The power was too much for lesser deities to handle, many of them manifesting as wild beasts whom terrorize the land.

The Black Dragon's spirit, once contained at Tokoyo no Kuni's kingdom, corrupted other countries, turning hundreds of deities into mindless and destructive beings. Chihiro helps weakened deities by calming their souls, and sometimes the White Dragon helps purify bad energy. The Black Dragon's bad energy can turn people into Aramitama, who can return heartless if they die. It's difficult to bring Aramitama back to a peaceful state.
