The Battle of Bowanpo/Bowangpo (博望坡の戦い, rōmaji: Hakubōha no Tatakai) or literally "Battle of Esteem Ambition Bank" is known as Zhuge Liang's first battle in the novel. To prove his intellect to the skeptics beside Liu Bei, he uses his cunning against the larger numbers led by Xiahou Dun. In the games and novel, it predates the army's retreat through Changban. Historically, it was Liu Bei himself who commenced the attack.

Role in Games[]

Dynasty Warriors[]

In the Shu version of the battle in Dynasty Warriors 4, Zhuge Liang, the master strategist, splits the army led by Xiahou Dun, Han Hao, and Yu Jin into three paths. The first general falls victim to a fire attack, the second to an ambush led by Guan Ping and the third to an ambush led by Guan Yu. Zhang Fei eventually raids the enemy supply depot, setting fire to the enemy supplies. If Zhuge Liang meets Cao Cao, he reveals that he is using the conqueror to fulfill his own ambitions for Shu.

The Wei version of the battle focuses on routing Zhao Yun and preventing the fire attack. The Wei version is one rank of difficulty higher and can be played after clearing three quests and the Battle of Guan Du in the previous chapter.

In Dynasty Warriors 7, Xinye is focused on Shu's perspective of the battle, with Zhang Fei as Zhang Fei. In Dynasty Warriors 8, Xinye is involved in both the Shu and Wei campaigns, with Cao Cao assisting Cao Ren.

The battle is also featured as a DLC map for Dynasty Warriors 8. The main objective is to lure Xiahou Dun, Yu Jin, and Han Hao into an ambush, while the Wei forces use Xu Shu's guidance to thwart Shu's plans.

Kessen[]

Cao Cao defeats Shu's army at Ru Nan and Guan Du, capturing Liu Bei's capital at Xu. Liu Bei seeks shelter at Xin Ye and recruits Zhuge Liang. The stage has three choke points, with the Wei army led by Cao Ren. Zhuge Liang proposes three strategies, with Liu Bei serving as a decoy. Zhang Fei guards the allied flank, while Xiahou Yuan slays Zhang Fei before being surrounded. Wei rescues Cao Ren and Xiahou Yuan, but if Wei wins, Cao Cao and Xiahou Yuan are nearly overtaken by an ambush.

Historical Information[]

The battle between Li Dian and Liu Bei occurred during Liu Bei's time under Liu Biao. Liu Bei invaded Cao Cao's location to take advantage of Cao Cao's absence due to conflict with Yuan Shang. Cao Cao sent military troops to prevent Liu Bei's advance, including Xiahou Dun, Yu Jin, and Li Dian. Li Dian detained Xiahou Dun, but Liu Bei retreated. Li Dian returned to Cao Cao to attack Yuan Shang. Liu Bei captured Xiahou Lan, who was later appointed as a military judge.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms[]

In chapter 39, Zhuge Liang is recruited into Liu Bei's forces and orders Xiahou Dun as the army's commander. Despite opposition from Xun Yu and Xu Shu, Liu Bei's Oath brothers support Liang's new role. Zhuge Liang is assigned to lead the army in a confrontation near the Bowang Slope. Zhao Yun leads Cao Cao's troops into an ambush, while Guan Yu and Zhang Fei lead reserve troops. Xiahou Dun's army is swayed by Zhuge Liang's ruse, and a great wind blows, causing confusion and death. Xiahou Lan is killed by Zhang Fei, and the remaining troops retreat back to Xuchang. Zhuge Liang prepares for their victory and is escorted by Mi Fang and Mi Zhu upon their arrival.
