Art of War

Art of War from Dynasty Warriors 5.

Art of War (孫子兵法, Chinese: Sūnzǐ Bīngfǎ; onyomi: Sonshi Heihō; lit. "Sunzi's Art of War") is a historical document authored by Sun Tzu. It is one of the seven military classics of ancient China and one of the most translated within the seven texts.

The scroll appears in the Dynasty Warriors series as an unlockable item. When it is equipped, it can double the length of time for temporary stat boosting battlefield items. Depending on the game, it adds an extra fifteen seconds to the usual time limit (such as in Warriors Orochi 3).

Dynasty Warriors: Online renames it as "Time Scroll" that adds an extra five seconds to temporary buffs. The upgraded version, "Eternal Scroll", adds ten seconds.

Way of the Musou (DW3)

Way of the Musou

Way of the Musou image Dynasty Warriors 5.

The Way of the Musou (真乱舞書, onyomi: Shin Ranbu Sho, lit. True Wild Dance Writing) is an item in Dynasty Warriors 3 through Dynasty Warriors: Online. It lets players use a character's True Musou regardless of the condition of their health bar.

How to Unlock[]

Suggested Use[]

Most characters should equip the Way of the Musou, because of the fire that is imbued with the strikes, and the ending, which usually covers a wide range, useful for crowd clearing. However, some characters' True Musous lift opponents off the ground, making the musou deal half damage due to a long-series damage reduction against juggled victims, while their regular musous make enemies stay planted, dealing full damage. Thus, those with True Musous that lift enemies off the ground while their regular musou doesn't should avoid using this item or at the very least, use the Ice Orb in conjunction with their True Musous to avoid as much juggling as possible.

Though for the most part, the AI in Dynasty Warriors 3 isn't afraid to instantly counter with their own Musou Attack should they be hit with past a 5-hit combo while still taking grounded hitstun, often forcing the player to "de-sync" their attacks on them to allow for more damage. As a result, there are times where the percentage fire damage and longer duration of attacks tends to make up for lack of grounded-hitstun damage; though the AI's tendency to counter with Musou Attacks while in hitstun is toned down in later installments, making True Musou Attack abuse not as much of a necessity as well as the addition of other items to allow for a variety of playstyles.

In Dynasty Warriors 4: Xtreme Legends however, characters with shockwave/energy blast-based Musou Attacks should make full use of this item to proc elements for major effect, often in tandem Master of Musou if they have enough room in order to make their True Musou Attacks or Musou Attacks in general guard-break against block-heavy targets (and of course, if they have enough item slots).

In Dynasty Warriors: Online this item disappears after one use and is used mainly to take down an enemy quickly with a musou. Its effects can be dampered by rain, but this is an uncommon occurrence. There is also an ability in game that acts like this item, but every single attack does twice the damage.

Survival guide

Survival Guide from Dynasty Warriors 5.

Survival Guide (発破伝書, onyomi: Happa Densho, lit. Discharge Blast Teachings) is an item in Dynasty Warriors 3 through Dynasty Warriors 5. It doubles the character's attack power when their health is whittled down to red when they get up from being knocked down. Its effect is found as the weapon ability, Rage, in the Warriors Orochi series and as the skill, Frenzy, in Samurai Warriors.

Power Scroll

The Power Scroll (剛柔法書, Gōjū Hōsho, lit. Strong and Tender Law Writing) is an equippable item in Dynasty Warriors 3 and 4 that enables the user to overcome weapon deadlocks more easily. On higher difficulties, it may prove useful when clashing against stronger enemy officers.

How to Unlock[]

Wind-Scroll

Wind Scroll image from Dynasty Warriors 5.

The Wind Scroll (真空書, onyomi: Shinkūsho, lit. Vacuum Writing) is an item from the Dynasty Warriors series that is used to increase the range of characters' attacks. It only applies to weapon-based swings, as energy-based attacks or shockwaves won't benefit from it.

Appearances[]

Wind Scroll is an Item that appears, or at least its effects in almost all Dynasty Warriors games. It appears as both a unique item and weapon effect in Dynasty Warriors 3 with its stats known as Reach.

It also appears in Dynasty Warriors 4 solely as an item unlocked under specific conditions, where its effects are the strongest in this game despite having no variable stats via multiplying the user's base reach by plus 1.5. It also appears in the following game. Dynasty Warriors 6 gets rid of the item concept, but the effects of the Wind Scroll appear as a weapon ability. Using a green, or "standard weapon" as the Renbu gauge increases, increases the range of attacks, or in the cases of Sun Shang Xiang and Yue Ying the distance of their arrows.

In Dynasty Warriors: Online it has two levels; one increases the range a small amount and the other has the effects of the original wind scroll. There is also an Advanced skill that acts like the Wind Scroll for its duration.

The effects also appear in Warriors Orochi games as a weapon effect, Range, which at max doubles the reach of your weapon, though it was severely nerfed in the third installment.

Unlocking[]

  • Dynasty Warriors 3: It is a standard item that is randomly found by breaking boxes or vases. Defeated officers may also drop it.
  • Dynasty Warriors 4: Battle of Xu Chang; Shu Forces; When given the choice to defend the siege ramp or the rear guard succeed in both. It helps to kill Xiahou Dun so the siege ramp can be set up quickly. Item appears in northwest passage.
  • Dynasty Warriors 5: Battle of He Fei Castle; Wu Forces; Defeat Cao Ren within 5 minutes of the stage. It is recommended to go around the inner sides, and to not wait for the ram or boulder. Item appears in the northeast.
  • Dynasty Warriors 5: Xtreme Legends: The Two Qiaos Legend Mode; Defeat Zuo Ci within one minute of his appearance.

Recommendations[]

Using the Wind Scroll is mainly up to taste. Some players equip it on literally everyone, while some only as a placeholder if there's an empty slot. Mainly the Wind Scroll is used to kill large crowds quickly, outreach a general, or because everyone else has larger reach.

Recommended Character Use[]

While the Wind Scroll can be used on mostly everyone, some characters need it more than most, and for some it's simply a nice touch. Here are some characters that it works very well with, generally if their attack range is short to begin with.

Not Recommended Character Use[]

Some characters do poorly with the Wind Scroll because how much they rely on shockwaves and energy based attacks, or they have a poor area of attack so that range doesn't have much to work with, unless they merely have some free item space. Some characters it is not recommended on are as follows.

Green-scroll

Green Scroll from Dynasty Warriors 5.

The Green Scroll (背水護符, Haisui Gofu, lit. Backwater Talisman), otherwise originally known as the Power Rune, is an item found first in Dynasty Warriors 4: Xtreme Legends and Dynasty Warriors 5. It increases the user's overall attack by an invisible amount, all while making them take more damage; thus, its attack power increase can stack with generic attack power boosts such as the Tiger Amulet. Though when paired with a maxed-out-defense stat plus a max level Tortoise Amulet, possible-flinching resistance is still in play since as aforementioned, the side-effect of the item is merely taking extra damage as opposed to directly affecting durability.

In Warriors Orochi 3 it is reprised in the form of the Spear of Sacrifice (背水矛, Haisuibō, lit. Backwater Lance) and other similar items (only this time the stats are directly/visually affected when equipping them in the item menus). The Rigor (猛砕, Mōsai, lit. Fierce Smashing) weapon attribute in the same Orochi installment also functions in a similar vein (free critical hits on all charge attacks at the cost of doubling the damage taken), along with Berserker (猛襲, Mōshū, lit. Fierce Assault) in Warriors Orochi 4 (same as Rigor, but enhances normal attacks instead). In Dynasty Warriors 8, the Frenzy weapon attribute also works in the same vein, but much more like how the item originally worked in terms of an indirect damage increase.

In most circumstances especially in 4: Xtreme Legends, a Power Rune setup alongside a maximum level Tiger Amulet, Herbal Remedy and/or percentage damage-elemental orb (such as Fire, Lightning, Blast or Poison) can allow for most charge attacks executed to be completely unblockable due to sheer raw power no matter the AI's level via difficulty, especially if the player is under the effects of a War God's Axe at the time (though Hyper Mode enemies may have a chance to remain unscathed due to increased defensive multipliers). The same also applies to Dynasty Warriors 5 as well.

Musou Armor

Musou Armor (DW4)

Musou Armor image from Dynasty Warriors 4: Xtreme Legends.

Musou Armor (無双鎧, onyomi: Musō Yoroi, lit. Unmatched Armor) is a rare item introduced in Dynasty Warriors 3: Xtreme Legends. Wearing this item prevents arrows from flinching or stunning the user while attacking. Though useful when surrounded by enemy archers in battle, it does not reduce the amount of damage caused by bow attacks. Therefore, it may be wise to equip the Musou Armor in conjunction with the Nanman Armor depending on the difficulty of the stage. Its effectiveness shines through in Hard Mode where even a single stray arrow may prove to be most fatal. The item's initial appearance is merely a recolor of the Cavalry Armor, but changes in later games to help distinguish the two.

How to Unlock[]

Fire Arrows (DW3)

Fire Arrows image from Dynasty Warriors 3
