The Battle of Chencang (陳倉の戦い, rōmaji: Chinsō no Tatakai) is a siege fought by the Kingdom of Shu during the Second Northern Expedition of Zhuge Liang. The Wei forces outwitted Zhuge Liang by building inner walls so that when the battered Shu forces finally breached the outer wall, they would face new defenses with fresh troops. Upon hearing of Zhang He's arrival, Zhuge Liang withdrew with his army losing valuable officers in the battle. Wei commander Hao Zhao won fame for this victory, but died afterwards at Chang'an. In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, it was during the course of this battle that Shu lost Zhang Bao and the death of Wei's general Wang Shuang.

Role in Games[]

Dynasty Warriors[]

In Dynasty Warriors 5, the battle between Shu and Wei forces is played, with Shu's forces under Zhuge Liang's command for the first quarter. The Shu have three armories and attack the castle gates, while Wei forces block the east gate. Zhuge Liang takes over command and destroys siege weapons, allowing the Wei forces to attack the castle walls. Sima Yi deploys ambush units to kill the Shu troops, but Cao Ren's defeat dismantles the Wei fireball contraptions and allows siege ramps to be set up. Defeating Hua Xin grants access to further keeps inside the castle, and Sima Yi's defeat opens the way to Sima Yi at the Wei main camp.

In Dynasty Warriors 8, the battle decides Zhang Bao's fate, with the map reused in Jin's story as the "Battle of Taoyang". In Dynasty Warriors 9, the campaign merges with both Jieting and Tianhui, with Yueying leading Shu's assault troops and siege weapons against Hao Zhao's men.

Warriors Orochi[]

In Warriors Orochi, players must defeat Wei's Odawara Castle and defeat Oichi and Nagamasa to cut off enemy reinforcements. In Warriors Orochi 2, players must rescue Hideyoshi's allies and defeat Sun Quan's Wu forces. In Warriors Orochi 4 Ultimate, the stage appears as part of the lower tree of Yggdrasil, fused with Ueda Castle. Taigong Wang and Yang Jian work together to break through the encampment of Odin. Defeating all parties leads to Gaia entering the underworld before Yggdrasil. The stage reappears again when the coalition escapes from Hades, who absorbs Yggdrasil's power. Cao Pi and Mitsunari Ishida are deified, but Yang Jian deifies himself to secure the escape point.

Historical Information[]

Zhuge Liang, despite losing at Jieting, continued his expedition, besieging the Chencang Road castle held by Hao Zhao and 1,000 troops. Hao Zhao faced a larger army with barricades, but built an interior wall to defend against the next attack. The Wei toppled tunnels, killing miners and destroying their works prematurely. Zhuge Liang retreated after 20-odd days, discovering Zhang He's reinforcement army.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms[]

In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Zhuge Liang's siege of Chencang is similar to its historical counterpart. However, Zhuge Liang's forces, including Zhang Ni, Liao Hua, and Wang Ping, struggle to overcome the Wei general, Wang Shuang. With supplies dwindling, Zhuge Liang orders a retreat, but predicts Wang Shuang will give chase. Wang Shuang is slain by Wei Yan, and Wang Shuang is killed. Hao Zhao, promoted for his service, falls ill, prompting Zhuge Liang to invade again. He commissions Wei Yan and Jiang Wei with three thousand troops to take Chencang in three days. Hao Zhao dies, and the Wei forces flee. Jiang Wei and Wei Yan arrive, but are surprised to find Zhuge Liang, Guan Xing, and Zhang Bao at the ramparts. Zhuge Liang explains that he gave them the task to avoid Hao Zhao's spies within the Shu camp.
