Crimson Sea (紅の海, Kurenai no Umi) is a sci-fi action adventure game developed and released by Koei. It is one of their original flagship titles for the Xbox and it currently remains a console exclusive. The game combines elements from the Warriors titles and is, in some ways, the spiritual predecessor for the Dynasty Warriors: Gundam games. It was given a PlayStation 2 sequel.

Yoshiki Sugiyama is producer and Yoshihiro Kishimoto is the producer of the North American port. The composer is Yoshihiro Ike.

Story

Set thousands of years in the future, the galaxy Theophilus is under attack from a mass alien invasion. Several people die on their arrival and continue to be wiped out as the invasion spreads. IAG, the Intelligence Agency of the Galaxy, try to contain the matter but their members continue to mysteriously disappear.

Enter Sho, a run down and broke private detective who has trouble paying for food and rent. He's abruptly hired for a high paying job by Live-D, a member of IAG. During the easy case, he realizes he was actually being tested by her and is suddenly recruited as a B-rank agent. He is forced to be the leader of G Squad, a group that goes to the aid of survivors and terminates aliens. Amidst the frenzy, Sho adjusts to his comrades and seeks the truth behind his new career.

Gameplay

Players are only allowed to play as Sho. The game is features mixed elements from role playing games and the action genre. When Sho isn't on a mission, he can wander around the IAG ship and talk to his comrades. He can chat with his coworkers, purchase training sessions, and buy new equipment at shops.

During battle sequences, Sho can fight with a short ranged laser weapon, a gun, or a Neo-Psionic, an attack that has different effects. Weapons contain three different parts, each customizable at any point in the game once you purchase them and will affect weapon stats and special functions. Neo Psionics act as magic and can either be similar to a musou attack, implement additional buffs on Sho's stats, or temporarily add a field effect such as stopping time. Combos mainly utilize the blade and gun attacks, which can be customized to the player's liking. Other battle controls are similar to the Warriors games except Sho can also lock-on to targets and dash in short spurts to avoid attacks.

Completing missions with a high rank unlocks more items for Sho to buy. Earning an S Rank is the only way to unlock the best version of some items or weapons.
