Dynasty Tactics (三國志戦記, Sangokushi Senki in Japan) is a strategy game for the Sony PlayStation 2. The title is set during the Three Kingdoms era and takes place after the Yellow Turban Rebellion and Dong Zhuo's death. The gameplay uses elements from Koei's in depth turn based system in the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series.

While the Dynasty Warriors series is a contemporary interpretation of the setting, the mood in Dynasty Tactics is archaic and gritty, closer to the tone set in the novel. The players can choose to roughly follow events from the epic or dramatically diverge from it.

The game is followed by a sequel in 2003 and a mobile version filled with additional downloadable content such as extra costumes and an edit character function.

Gameplay[]

The game is divided into two phases: planning and battles. Each ruler is assigned a capital and can check their armies, recruit civilians, or create an army. Objectives are set for each segment, with turns given to complete them. The ultimate goal is to unite the land under one ruler, but the method is up to the player. Cities with no alignment can be easily claimed.

Battles in strategy games are played on a grid map system, with each side having two armies and envoys with the Spy skill. The commander, strategist, and other officers lead the army. The order of units is determined by morale and terrain. The winning armies face north, south, west, or east, affecting their defense and assistance capabilities. Battles are won when the leading enemy commander flees.

A unit can perform a Tactic command when a square within its movement range is red. Combos can double or triple the tactics' effects, with length determined by the number of generals. Strategists can create a Tactics Link for allies. Tactic combos are useful for ending battles, saving resources, and capturing enemy generals. Officers receive unique buffs triggered by unit placement or morale.
