Dynasty Warriors 5 Empires (真・三國無双4 Empires, Shin Sangoku Musou 4 Empires) is the second expansion for Dynasty Warriors 5. Like the previous Empires expansion, the game focuses on the player's ability to simulate a leader taking and controlling territory, eventually becoming a powerful leader controlling China.

Gameplay

  • The entire cast from Dynasty Warriors 5 returns along with the ability to create an edit character from the Xtreme Legends title.
  • This expansion uses an updated version of the Dynasty Warriors 4: Empires system; policies are offered by officers and can be accepted or declined. These decisions can affect the battle (by offering various advantages) or the campaign as a whole (by altering popularity or expending funds). There are about 75 policies overall including 25 new ones introduced in this game. Like in the previous title, delegating the selection of policies to a particular officer may enable them to become the player's strategist.
  • The annex option enables players to conquer hostile forces in an instant by taking over their capital or isolating their leader.
  • Players may still choose whether to conquer the land in a historical scenario or in a fictional setting where the roles of each officer vary completely.
  • New in this game are the options to execute captured generals or allow them to leave unscathed. Officers may also die from old age if players may so desire.
  • Watching certain events unfold in the game will automatically unlock new character artworks in the archive gallery.
  • Players can replace the background music of each battle with tracks from both current and previous titles.
  • Four new items have been included to help raise the effectiveness of steeds and other warfare animals. These may be unlocked by succeeding in land development and trading policies.
  • During battle, players can order their allies to attack, defend, or group together by using the directional pad. This feature provides more tactical control when invading or protecting bases.
  • The game's Free Mode differs from that of the original title in which the historical value of each battle is secondary compared to the territorial aspect. Also, generals and lieutenants can be swapped at will.
