Eka (エイカ) is a secondary antagonist in Harukanaru Toki no Naka de 4. Like other Tsuchigumo, his name is actually a number which means "one" in Sanskrit. He hinders the main party in the later half of the game's main story.

Role in Game[]

Eka, a powerful Tsuchigumo in Tokoyo, can summon curses and barriers but loses his sight. He serves Nasatya and infiltrates the Nakatsu Kuni army at 15. During the invasion, Eka betrays the army and traps Oshihito before returning to Nasatya. When Asvin defects, Eka tells Nasatya where Chihiro is and is ordered to kill her. He goes to Kumano and defiles Genbu's altar, trying to assassinate Chihiro. Oshihito protects her and reveals his identity. Tooya asks Eka to step down but protects Chihiro. Their desire summons Genbu and defeats Eka. Eka conspires against Chihiro in Michiomi and Tooya's narratives. Eka continues to give Nasatya information until Chihiro breaches their defenses. Nasatya releases Eka and he rescues Nasatya. Eka's whereabouts are unknown, but he leaves an illusion for Chihiro.

In the final and canon timeline he and Nasatya barely survive Tokoyo no Kuni's annihilation. Much to his surprise, Chihiro invites him to board the flying ship. He questions her judgment based on their past history with one another, but she respects his loyalty to Nasatya. He then gladly accepts her offer. His whereabouts thereafter in the new world are not clarified.

Character Information[]

Development[]

After Ribhu was created, Ruby Party members wanted to include a right hand man for Nasatya, thus leading to Eka's conceptualization. They believe he serves a dual purpose by personifying Tooya's Tsuchigumo background for players.

Personality[]

In his role as the chief of Tsuchigumo, Eka is driven by a deep desire to uphold the legacy and birthright of his people. This commitment to their well-being is evident in his seemingly merciful approach when issuing commands to Tooya. Despite his lack of personal ambitions, Eka seldom displays any emotional reactions, presenting himself as an empty vessel indifferent to the struggles of humanity. Nevertheless, his unwavering loyalty to Nasatya remains his primary concern amidst the ongoing war. Eka holds a profound devotion to the prince and would willingly make the ultimate sacrifice to ensure his safety.

Character Symbolism[]

Eka's symbolic color is sumisome, a dark gray shade prevalently associated with black ink. The shade is said to have been named after the puckering of ink which appears when written on white paper. It is often used to be a polar opposite of a whitish color.

The wolf's bane is his symbolic flower. Within Japan a prominent legend claims that it resembles the shape of a circular tori-kabuto (literally "bird helmet"). Its armour comparison has led to its warrior-like tones within the flower language. Wolf's bane is also famous for possessing a potentially deadly toxin when consumed; it has been argued to have been a primary ingredient for poisons within the country until the 19th century. The flower allegedly killed several figures within Japanese history and mythology, a few of which are said to include Yamatotakerunomikoto, Itsusenomikoto, and Prince Chuai. Therefore it may also represent misanthropy, resentfulness, or pessimism.

Fighting Style[]

Eka possesses moderate statistics as a boss, thereby posing no significant threat to high-level characters. However, caution should be exercised regarding his spellcasting abilities, as they have the potential to inflict the miasma (poison) status.
