Fan Chou (onyomi: Han Chū) is an officer who served Dong Zhuo. He convinced Li Jue and Guo Si to spare Emperor Xian after their lord's demise in order to control the imperial court.

Role in Games[]

Fan Chou appears as a generic officer under Dong Zhuo in all Dynasty Warriors titles. In Dynasty Warriors 4, he is charged with the defense of the supply depots at Si Shui Gate. His defeat enables the player to take the supplies and increase morale for their side. In Dynasty Warriors 5, he leads the ambush unit at Hu Lao Gate when fighting for the Allied Forces.

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms has Fan Chou appear up until Cao Cao's rise to power. As a playable general, his most prominent stats are warfare and leadership.

Historical Information[]

Raised in Liang Province, Fan Chou joined Dong Zhuo's side and fought in many of his campaigns. After his master's assassination at the hands of Lu Bu in 192, he was among those who pleaded Wang Yun for amnesty only to be rejected alongside Li Jue, Guo Si, and Zhang Ji. Out of desperation, the four of them besieged the capital with their armies and took the emperor hostage.

With Wang Yun dead, they were free to shape the government however they pleased. Fan Chou in particular made himself a marquis within their corrupt faction. But when relations between Li Jue and Guo Si soured, he was caught in the crossfire of their feud and perished.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms[]

The novel changes the cause of Fan Chou's death to further disparage the remnants of Dong Zhuo. Tasked with defending Chang'an from hostile forces, he helps fend off Ma Teng's attack on the capital and chases Han Sui all the way to Chencang. But when reminded by Han Sui of their common roots, he decides to let his target go. Li Jue's nephew Li Li, who had a falling out with Fan Chou for not fighting hard enough, witnesses this act of mercy and reports it to his uncle. Following Jia Xu's advice, Li Jue invites Fan Chou to a banquet and has him beheaded right in the middle of the festivities. His forces are then transferred to Zhang Ji's unit.
