Angelique (アンジェリーク) is a romantic simulation video game series made by Ruby Party for the female audience. It is the first entry in the Neoromance series and generally seen as the start of the otome game genre. The namesake of the series is the default name for the main protagonist. "Angelique" is a derivative of the word angel, often being transliterated within the games as "angel like" or "like an angel". The series and the protagonist's nickname is Ange (アンジェ).

Angelique is a fantasy series with European names and motifs, aiming for a sweet and gentle tone. The protagonist changes each installment, providing a unique experience. Dialogue is simple, inspired by shōjo manga, and the protagonist's voice is kept simple to preserve her cuteness.

The Angelique games are mainly simulation driven, but the board game and role-playing genre have been introduced into the series. When Neoromance fans answered Ruby Party's surveys with a demand for adventure-like games, the Harukanaru Toki no Naka de and Neo Angelique games were made. Character designs for all of the games are done by Kairi Yura. She illustrated character artwork and game covers for the five major installments in the series.

Setting[]

Angelique is a series set in a faraway cosmos ruled by a Queen who prays for the well-being of its inhabitants. She resides on the Holy Land, a living plane with slower time flow. Queens must leave their homelands and loved ones to protect the cosmos. The Queen's cosmos is empowered by nine magical components, called Sacrea, which manifest as mystical spirits. Each Sacrea spirit entrusts their powers to a Sacred Guardian, who governs their Sacrea power and protects the Queen from invaders. The series introduces a second sister universe called the Sacred Beast Cosmos.

Overview[]

The Angelique games are designed to simplify and make non-simulation fans understand the parameters of characters. The protagonist divides their activities daily, taking a break for weekends. Each game has a specific task and energy level, with characters having an "Intimacy" and "Affinity" setting. The Intimacy parameter is based on the player's actions, affecting their dialogue and service. The maximum capacity for Intimacy is 200, while Affinity can reach 100. Male characters often need a maximum Intimacy and Affinity rating for a love confession. Players can raise these stats for romantic endings or avoid them for a normal game. A "bad ending" is available if players fail to meet the main story's objective and aren't liked by any characters. Multiple characters can reach high ratings, but players risk losing their Intimacy stat.
