The Battle of Changshan (常山の戦い, rōmaji: Jōzan no Tatakai) was a battle during Yuan Shao's campaign against the Heishan Bandits. During the battle, he was aided by Lu Bu and his men.

Role in Games[]

Dynasty Warriors[]

In Dynasty Warriors 5, Yuan Shao faces Gongsun Zan and Zhang Yan, with Lu Bu's forces assisting. Yuan Shao initially distrusts Lu Bu, but he eventually proves himself by defeating Zhang Yan. The battle returns in Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends, where Lu Bu joins Yuan Shao and helps subjugate Gongsun Zan. Zhang Yan and his gang are the major enemies, and rescuing Yuan Shao's army three times convinces Yuan Shao to reinforce him. In Dynasty Warriors 9, Lu Bu enters Yuan Shao's camp at Ye, and they face off against Changshan bandits. Lu Bu defeats Zhang Yan and his bandits, leaving Yuan Shao's service. The lack of Gongsun Zan and Liu Bei's forces in the skirmish adds tension to the story.

Warriors Orochi[]

Changshan is a gaiden stage in Wu's story, where the Orochi army fights against resistance forces led by Mitsuhide Akechi. The main target is capturing storehouses and escorting supply captains into the base. In Warriors Orochi 4 Ultimate, Changshan is a battle between the Coalition and Odin's forces with Gaia. The player faces a standoff with the Coalition, and Hades, who is too powerful to match, pursues the remnants of the Coalition. Kaguya and Gaia work to restore Hades's time traveling abilities to rescue Odin, and barriers are set up at Changshan. After Hades' defeat, Gaia has a parting battle against the Coalition before they are sent back to their worlds. Zeus confronts the Coalition at the center, and after Zeus' defeat, Gaia is rejoined by Hades and Zeus as they battle the humans for the last time.

Historical Information[]

In 193, Yuan Shao led a campaign to subdue the Black Mountain Bandits in Ji Province. He attacked them in Henei, Luchang hills, Zuozi Zhangba, and a bandit coalition. After defeating Yu Du and his 10,000 men, Shao marched west to Changshan, where Zhang Yan led 20,000 to 30,000 well-trained troops. The two forces clashed for over ten days, with many bandits killed. Yuan Shao's men were exhausted, and Zhang Yan withdrew from the battle.
