Chen Dao (onyomi: Chin Tō) is a Shu general whose bravery and fame were compared to Zhao Yun. He is omitted from Romance of the Three Kingdoms, his historical feats emulated by Zhao Yun instead.
Role in Games[]
Chen Dao is a prominent Shu officer in the Dynasty Warriors series who follows Liu Bei, appearing as early as Xu Province. He is often present in battles such as Changban, Chengdu, Mt. Dingjun or Fan Castle. In earlier games, he also appears at Yiling or the Wuzhang Plains, although he tends to be replaced by Zhao Yun in these battles in later installments. He does not appear in Dynasty Warriors 4 and its sequel.
In Warriors Orochi 3, Chen Dao acts as Zhao Yun's replacement officer.
In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Chen Dao is a decent officer with a leadership and war stat in the 70's and is best used with infantry units. Originating as a free officer from Runan, he tends to be loyal to Liu Bei and serves him in scenarios roughly after Guandu with his death date usually being after Wuzhang Plains.
Historical Information[]
Chen Dao was from Runan, Yu Province. He entered Liu Bei's service around the year 194 when the latter proclaimed himself Governor of Yu Province, a position that was recommended for Liu Bei by Tao Qian but denied by the Han court. Chen Dao became Liu Bei's aide-de-camp and would fight many battles by his side, including the escape at Changabn slope. He then followed Liu Bei in conquering Yi Province from Liu Zhang. When Liu Bei named himself Emperor of Shu, Chen Dao was made Captain of the "White Feathered" unit, which was Liu Bei's Imperial Guard. When Liu Bei was defeated at Yiling, Chen Dao escorted him to safety at Baidi Castle.
After Liu Bei's death, his son Liu Shan succeeded the throne and Zhuge Liang became co-regent. He appointed Chen Dao as Protector of the Army and sent him to Yong'an in order to aid Li Yan against potential Wu invasions. In 226, Zhuge Liang refined Shu's human resource management. Many officials were demoted in the process, but Chen Dao was among those who received a promotion. Chen Dao was made "General Who Conquers the West" and replaced Li Yan as the commander of Yong'an. Chen Dao died sometime afterwards and the official Yang Xi compared him to Zhao Yun in terms of loyalty in an official memorial. Chen Dao was made a Duke posthumously and would later be praised by Chen Shou in the Sanguozhi as a brave warrior whose fame was next to Zhao Yun.
