Chen Wu (onyomi: Chin Bu) is a military general who served under the Kingdom of Wu. He is famous for having a face that was considered by many to be fierce and ugly.

Roles in Games[]

Chen Wu appears in numerous Wu battles in Dynasty Warriors. He makes his first appearance at the Conquest of Wu and often tends to survive his historical death to appear in later Wu battles such as Shiting or Hefei Castle. Akin to history and the novel, he is one of the prominent Wu officers at Hefei. During Dynasty Warriors 8, Chen Wu's dialogue at Hefei will depend on whether or not Sun Ce was freed from Gan Ji's grasp.

Warriors Orochi has him serve under the Wu forces as well.

In Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Chen Wu is a decent naval officer with high fighting stats. His depiction tends to follow the description of a fierce general, which is displayed by his rather low intelligence and politics stats. He is involved in a special event that has Sun Ce recruit various officers from the Jiangdong area after he conquers it from Liu Yao. Chen Wu is one of them, along with Zhou Tai, Jiang Qin and others.

Historical Information[]

Chen Wu originated from Lujiang in Yang Province and first entered service under Sun Ce when he was 18. He was a fierce warrior who always participated in the front lines for Sun Ce and later Sun Quan's armies. In modern conversions, he was about 175 cm (5'9") and considered to be a giant by his peers. Even so, his modesty and politeness made him a popular hero for the people in Wu. He helped Sun Ce in defeating Liu Yao and liberating the Wu Commandery and later followed him to defeat Liu Xun and the remnants of Yuan Shu's forces. Sun Quan particularly admired him for his kindness and was very fond of him. He was dubbed as one of the five scholarly generals that Sun Quan dearly trusted.

In 215, Chen Wu participated in the Battle of Hefei to protect his lord from danger. However, he was killed in battle by Zhang Liao's subordinate Hao Zhao. According to Pei Songzhi's annotations, Sun Quan ordered the death of Chen Wu's beloved concubine before his funeral so the two could live happily together in the afterlife. His family was rewarded with the tax income of 200 households. He left behind two sons, Chen Xiu and Chen Biao.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms[]

The novel states that he had a yellow skinned face and red pupils for his eyes. He died in the same battle as his historical account but fell during a battle with Pang De. His death brought bitter distress to Sun Quan and his body was recovered and buried with Dong Xi.
