Guan Hai (onyomi: Kan Gai) is a commander for the Yellow Turbans.
Role in Games[]
Guan Hai appears in Dynasty Warriors as an officer of the Yellow Turbans during the Yellow Turban Rebellion. Depending on the game, he either leads his own unit or is a subordinate officer of someone else. In the eighth installment, he defends Zhang Jiao's main camp and cannot be defeated if the player is on the Yellow Turban's side.
Additionally to serving Zhang Jiao at the Yellow Turban Rebellion, Guan Hai also makes an appearance in Wu's story at the rebellion of Ou Xing in Dynasty Warriors 7. In the Xtreme Legends expansion, Guan Hai also serves as the enemy commander in Taishi Ci's legend stage.
Warriors Orochi has Guan Hai serve Zhang Jiao. Once Zhang Jiao joins the Samurai forces in the first installment, Guan Hai joins them as well.
The Romance of the Three Kingdoms games give Guan Hai low 80's war and low 70's leadership, but his other stats are near the bottom. Giving him a decent civil officer as a deputy in battle is essential to prevent him from falling to all kinds of enemy ploys. He is usually seen serving any Yellow Turban force that is present in a scenario. If there is none, he can usually be found around Beihai as a free officer. In the Power-Up Kit expansion's fictional bonus scenario Emperor He Jin, Guan Hai is the leader of the Yellow Turban force in Beihai.
Historical Information[]
Guan Hai was a native of Qing Province, present-day Shandong. Although he did not serve Zhang Jiao in any way, he always claimed to fight for the legacy of the Yellow Turbans. He eventually rose to become a Yellow Turban leader in Qing Province and began to pillage the area. In 193, Guan Hai surrounded and besieged Kong Rong in Duchang when the latter was sent to quell the uprising in the area. Kong Rong in turn sent his general Taishi Ci to seek help from Liu Bei. Liu Bei agreed to lend Kong Rong 3,000 men and sent reinforcements to Duchang. Upon the reinforcements' arrival, Guan Hai retreated and his forces scattered. He is not mentioned in historical records afterwards.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms[]
In the novel, he was said to have the strength of ten men and helped to lead the third insurgence of the rebellion. He began attacking Kong Rong in chapter 11 and slew Kong Rong's general Zong Bao after the former refused to provide them with food when they robbed the area, later when Liu Bei and Taishi Ci arrived to relieve Beihai, he went out to battle with Guan Yu. After a few bouts, he was struck down.
