Hyrule Warriors (ゼルダ無双, Zelda Musou) is a collaboration title between Omega Force's Warriors IPs and Nintendo's long running Legend of Zelda series. Hyrule Warriors was voted one of the top ten Wii U titles of 2014 by Club Nintendo members. It led to Legends and Definitive Edition releases on Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Switch and then a sequel announced in September 2020 to be released on November 20, 2020, titled Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity set 100 years before the events of Breath of the Wild.[1]

The game, a celebration title for Zelda fans, was produced by Hisashi Koinuma and Yosuke Hayashi, with Eiji Aonuma as supervisor. The Koei-Tecmo side director is Masaki Furusawa. The goal was to sell one million units worldwide. Early buyers received a serial code for three costumes, while the Premium Box edition included an illustrated databook, Triforce table clock, and Wisdom costumes. The game's downloadable version is 7.8 GB and features Mie Sonozaki and Esra Guler in English.

Plot[]

The Triforce is a hope-granting artifact with power, courage, and wisdom. It was created by a hero to defeat an ancient evil. Cia, a witch, maintains the Triforce but becomes jealous of Link and Zelda, unleashing evil on Hyrule. Link must save Hyrule from darkness.

Gameplay[]

The game follows the basic controls and gameflow of Dynasty Warriors 2, with 'Y' being the normal attack and 'X' being the charge attack. Players can play on the GamePad or with the Wii U Pro Controller and Wii Remote + Nunchuk setup for local multiplayer. Hearts represent health and can be increased by finding Pieces of Heart or Heart Containers. Leveling up boosts health capacity and attack power, and filling the Experience Gauge can grant large KO count bonuses.

The yellow bar is the character's Special Technique gauge, which can be filled by finding Triforce pieces around the map or by attacking foes. Leveling up during battle completely fills the Special Gauge.

Players must find an enemy's weak point in attack patterns to defeat them. A "Weak Point Gauge" hovers above them, and if destroyed, massive damage is dealt. Powerful bosses are the main threat for each level. Morale is represented by glowing energy, and characters have access to weapons and items from the Zelda universe. These items play critical roles in defeating giant bosses.

  • Training Dojo - Pay a Rupee fee to automatically level up characters, but no higher than the highest-leveled character.
  • Apothecary - Purchase Mixture potions with Rupees. Mixtures apply only once and are automatically activated for the next battle once consumed, granting various passive effects. Only one Mixture can be consumed per battle. The effects of mixtures will not be lost upon defeat in battle.
  • Badge Market - Use Rupees and raw materials to permanently upgrade a character's abilities and unlock their full moveset trees.
  • Smithy - The game allows players to upgrade weapons, transfer skills, sell them for Rupees, appraise hidden skills, and remove unwanted skills for a fee. It also allows transferring skills from one weapon to another, and valuing hidden skills.

The majority of the game is partly voiced. Story and battle character dialogue are silent with limited audible utterances and quotes; the third-person omniscient narration is fully voiced. Priced DLC and free updates includes costumes, characters, weapons, adventure maps, Amiibo support, and scenarios.

Legend Mode[]

Main story mode separated into eighteen chapters. Clearing this mode unlocks the second Gold Skulltula on a map and a Harder difficulty setting.

Free Mode[]

Reprise of other Warriors titles. Allows the player to replay unlocked Legend Mode chapters as any unlocked character.

Adventure Mode[]

Board game experience which uses classic Legend of Zelda NES visuals. This mode must be played to unlock additional characters, higher-leveled weapons, more heart pieces, and Gold Skulltulas. Online interaction is available only in this mode.

Challenge Mode[]

Includes multiple battles with specific restrictions or conditions.

A playable demo was present at E3 2014 with additional playable characters (Zelda and Midna) revealed. An early peek of Nintendo's E3 Zelda trailer was posted onto Twitter before the main event. It was given coverage during E3 Nintendo Treehouse Live and an after show session.

Producer Hayashi presented the game during the second half of the July 24 Denjin☆Gacha! episode. The completion conference was broadcast live on July 31, 14:00 (JST). Kou Shibusawa, Shigeru Miyamoto, the supervisors, the producers, and Haruna Iikubo, Morning Musume. '14 member and sub-leader, were appeared for the presentation. The idol received a treasure box with Miyamoto's autograph and gleefully showed it off on the group's blog. Nico Nico users could watch a follow-up program that included a Twilight Princess Let's Play on August 1, 20:30 (JST). It was the star title for the August 5, 12:00 (JST) Nintendo Direct episode.

It was one of the playable demos at Koei Tecmo's Tokyo Game Show 2014 booth. This game had three stage events at the Koei-Tecmo stage for the four-day event; the first two were dedicated to announcing and featuring future updates while the last one was a tournament.

A closed early trial in Japan took place July 31st. Participants received an original clear file for their trouble. On August 30 Nintendo hosted an event at the Renaissance Seattle Hotel by Marriott where players could play the full game, interact with a Zelda cosplay actor hired by Nintendo, and gain access to merchandise.

Weekly Famitsu included a digital compilation within its September 4 issue. Two guidebooks are planned. The first includes Legend Mode maps and general combat tips while the second has tips for Adventure Mode. Purchase the limited Gamecity Shopping offer for both guidebooks to receive a fabric poster of the main visual.

  • The Materials Book reveals an unused female Link lookalike named Linkle. The concept echoes a Western Internet misunderstanding regarding Link's gender in the E3 2014 teaser for The Legend of Zelda. The positive feedback for her character led to her finished development.
