Hao Meng (onyomi: Kaku Hō) is a minor general serving under Lu Bu.
Role in Games[]
Hao Meng appears as a subordinate of Lu Bu throughout the Dynasty Warriors series. He is constantly featured throughout Lu Bu and Diao Chan's Musou Modes in Dynasty Warriors 6 and often serves directly under another general. While only appearing at Xiapi in Dynasty Warriors 7, he also appears at Puyang in the sequel. The Xtreme Legends expansion also features him in Lu Bu's story mode, where he is one of his allies accompanying him in most battles. At the final stand at Xiapi, he and Zang Ba will defect to Cao Cao's forces if the fire attacks on the armoury and supply depot succeed. He is an average cavalry general in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, serving under Lu Bu.
Historical Information[]
Hao Meng was from Henei Commandery in Si Province. When he joined Lu Bu is unknown, but it was probably after the latter's escape from Chang'an.
In 196, he staged a rebellion against Lu Bu at Xiapi and attacked Lu Bu's main camp. Lu Bu managed to escape together with his wife by climbing the walls, but he was unaware of who the rebels were exactly. He could only make out that they were from Henei due to their accents.
Lu Bu escaped to Gao Shun's camp and told him about the Henei soldiers. Gao Shun was sure that the rebels were led by Hao Meng and took his troops to attack them at Lu Bu's office, driving them away. Hao Meng returned to his camp, where his subordinate Cao Xing refused to rebel against Lu Bu and fought him. Hao Meng was able to injure Cao Xing with his spear, but Cao Xing in turn cut off one of his arms. Shortly afterwards, Gao Shun's forces arrived and Hao Meng was captured and executed. His men were given to Cao Xing.
While debated, others have claimed that the incident regarding Hao Meng also involved Lu Bu being bare-naked at the time as the very latter fled his tent without even grabbing a bathrobe to clothe himself. Even then, the result was the same where Hao Meng was forced away by Gao Shun's timely acting and Cao Xing eventually betrayed him.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms[]
Hao Meng first appears in chapters 11 and 12 as a subordinate of Zhang Liao during the Battle of Puyang. He and his colleagues ambushed Cao Cao during two of his retreats. In chapter 18, he served as a subordinate of Gao Shun and faced Xiahou Dun at Xiaopei. Finally, in chapter 19, he was sent to request reinforcements from Yuan Shu, but was ambushed by Zhang Fei, captured and executed.
