The Battle of Nanzhong (南中の戦い, rōmaji: Nanchū no Tatakai), also called the Nanman Campaign in earlier titles, often entails Zhuge Liang's southern campaign to subjugate the Southern tribes. It is a series of battles against their leader, Meng Huo. Other kingdoms also subdue them in their respective scenarios. Players see many different versions of the region during the games.

Role in Games[]

Dynasty Warriors[]

In the Dynasty Warriors series, Meng Huo faces seven defeats by Shu forces before joining them. The battles involve secret passages, poison swamps, powerful troops, and vicious beasts. In Dynasty Warriors 5, Wu kills Meng Huo to suppress the south. In Xtreme Legends, Meng Huo's Legend Mode explores the possibility of invasion by Wei after Shu falls. Nan Zhong appears as an optional quest in Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce, with two maps and unique Nanman generals. The battle does not appear in the main story but is mentioned in Shu's narration scene.

The map from Dynasty Warriors 5, where Wu invades the Nanman, is included in Dynasty Warriors 8 for both sides. The battle remains the same, with a larger number of reinforcements. The animal battle offers the limited-edition Amazon Bird. The player must keep Cao Cao and Guo Jia safe, defeat Li Hui, and rescue Guo Jia. The player must defeat Pang Tong in the north camp to finish the stage.

Nanzhong is also seen in the Xtreme Legends expansion as a scenario for both Meng Huo and Zhurong, where the two drive out poachers. When the battle begins poachers will arrive in the following order; Yuan Shao will appear to take the elephants, Xiaoqiao appears to take the pandas, Yueying appears at the northeast to take the tigers there, Liu Biao and Yuan Shu attack the northwestern garrison to take the elephants, Dian Wei appears in the central area to take the tigers, and Dong Zhuo appears to seize any animal within the vicinity. Defeating Dong Zhuo will put a firm stop to the poachers, but allowing more than three animals to be taken or letting Meng Huo get defeated will result in defeat.

In Dynasty Warriors 9, Nanzhong, located south of Chendu, is a key location in the five fronts assault on Shu led by Cao Pi. The player is tasked with escorting Yong Kai through the Nanzhong area, fighting off Lu Kai and Wei Yan. The Nanman forces advance, and Nanzhong becomes a target for Shu, who seeks to suppress the Nanman tribes under more peaceful terms. The campaign "Devotion to Nanzhong" highlights the Nanman's dedication to defending their land. The battle evolves as the player clears missions, with Meng Huo intruding in many but weakening him. The battle involves various missions, including rescuing Li Hui from King Wutugu, inducing Gao Ding to betray the Nanman, and defeating animals trained by the Nanman to attack. Zhurong captures Zhang Yi and lures Ma Zhong to rescue him. Meng Huo and Zhurong surrender, and the Nanman assist Shu against Cao Pi at Jing Province.

Warriors Orochi[]

In Warriors Orochi, Zhao Yun's army is aided by Jiang Wei after escaping Ueda Castle. They set up an ambush for Orochi's officers, leading to their joining Zhao Yun's cause. Meng Huo, Zhu Rong, and Zhang He join Zhao Yun's cause, while Zhang He joins Cao Pi's cause. In Musou Orochi Z, San Zang, Himiko, and Sun Wukong travel through Nanzhong, solving problems and fighting tricked warriors. In Warriors Orochi 3, Nemea, Sun Shangxiang, Kai, Ding Feng, and Kaguya pursue Da Ji, while Meng Huo, Zhurong, Wei Yan, and Zhang He save the land from the serpent army. Kojirō helps drive off the demons and joins the coalition. In Warriors Orochi 4, the coalition learns about the horrors in the Greek Army and uses them to defeat the Greek army.
