Liang Xu (onyomi: Ryō Cho) is an officer of Wei who later served Shu.

Role in Games[]

The Dynasty Warriors series have Liang Xu appear at the Battle of Tianshui. In Dynasty Warriors 4, after his friend Jiang Wei turns on Ma Zun, he convinces Liang Xu and Yi Shang to go against the Wei commander as well, thus taking Tian Shui. The other games tend to reduce him to a minor general in the stage, although the eighth installment has him ambush the Shu army near the beginning of the stage. He also appears at Chang'an as part of another ambush.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms gives Liang Xu mediocre stats in the 50's and 60's. He can be recruited in Tianshui and serves Wei and, depending on the game, Shu in the later scenarios.

Quotes[]

  • "There you are! Just as Master Jiang Wei predicted! This is where you meet your end!"

Historical Information[]

Not much is known about Liang Xu historically. He served as a minister in Tianshui Commandery when Zhuge Liang started his northern expeditions. He went with his superior Ma Zun to defend the area against Zhuge Liang. Within a short period of time, many counties in the commandery surrendered to Zhuge Liang and Ma Zun became suspicious of his subordinates, deciding to flee in the middle of the night. Liang Xu, Jiang Wei and the others then surrendered. After the defeat at Jieting, Cao Zhen, and Zhang He reclaimed the commanderies that had joined Shu and Liang Xu was driven back into Shu. He eventually became Minister Herald and is not mentioned further.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms[]

Liang Xu appears during the chapters 92 and 93 in Romance of the Three Kingdoms. During the former, he was part of Ma Zun's war council and suggested together with Yin Shang that they should attempt to rescue the besieged Xiahou Mao at Nan'an. In the next chapter, Liang Xu and Yin Shang were left to guard Tianshui. Later, he tried to calm down Xiahou Mao when the latter learned of Jiang Wei's seeming surrender to Shu. Since he and Yin Shang were friends of Jiang Wei, when the latter really surrendered to Shu, Xiahou Mao ought to put them both to death, but Yin Shang heard about it and both he and Liang Xu decided to surrender to Shu. Liang Xu also made his brother Liang Qian surrender to Shu and was rewarded with the post of Governor of Tianshui.
