Zhen Yuanzi (鎮 元子, pinyin: Zhēn Yuánzǐ, onyomi: Chin Genshi) is an optional party member in Saiyuki: Journey West. Unlike the Song twins, he is the first character that may choose to not join Sanzo's party.
Role in Game[]
Chin Genshi, a knowledgeable dryad skilled in medicine and magic, lives in a hut at Infinity Ridge. When Lady Jiehua falls into a coma in Inns Town, Hakkai agrees to lead Sanzo and the others to Genshi's home. Goku spots a tempting fruit on a tree and expresses his desire to pick it, but Sanzo takes charge and decides whether it is allowed.
Upon arriving at Genshi's dwelling, they are warmly greeted by him, who reveals himself as Hakkai's mentor. He informs them about the Angel Fruit, a miraculous remedy for any illness. Hakkai expresses concern about the potential consequences of taking it and endangering Genshi, but Genshi agrees to give it to them under the condition that they win a fight. After emerging victorious, Genshi reminds Hakkai of a bet they had made. If Hakkai failed to find a job and returned empty-handed after a month, Genshi would receive 1,000 gold. On the other hand, if Hakkai held a job for a long period, Genshi would reward him with 10,000 gold. Hakkai believes he has won the bet by accompanying Sanzo on their journey, but Genshi clarifies that he had made the wager to help Hakkai gain courage in the human world.
Genshi keeps his promise and goes with Sanzo's group to Inns Town. He gives the Angel Fruit to his granddaughter, Kikka. Genshi explains their relationship to Hakkai, who is confused. Genshi reveals that Kikka was born after Hakkai left their birthplace. Genshi asks if Sanzo's group is scared of monsters and if they rely too much on their monster companions. If Sanzo admits to relying on their companions, Genshi gives them the Angel Fruit. He then returns to his hut.
In the second scenario, if Sanzo says their companions are genuine friends, Genshi decides to join their journey. After the final battle, Genshi overhears Hakkai wanting to stay with Sanzo. He is happy for his student and leaves with Kikka to go back home, promising to visit Gold Temple often.
Personality[]
Genshi is a friendly old-timer who acts as Hakkai's chiding mentor figure. While he pesters his student to keep vigilant and responsible, Genshi is prone to the same laziness and lackadaisical behavior he accuses for Hakkai. He enjoys humans' company and is friends with the elderly living in Inns Town. He occasionally shares memories of his time together with Kikka, much to the latter's embarrassment.
Fighting Style[]
Genshi is a wizard character with weak defense, average speed, and a weak physical attack. However, he starts with adapt proficiency in all five main elements of the game. Players can train him in any magic they desire due to his ample magic points and high magic stat. His personal skill, Magic Sink, allows him to drain magic points from a nearby target and randomly silence them. In his Wereform, Genshi transforms into a giant willow tree and can unleash various wide area attacks with a Nature element. He also possesses one Earth attack. However, similar to Kikka, he is very vulnerable in this form.
