Yaksa is the name for a rank of deities within Hinduism and Buddhism, not a single entity as the character in the game.

Yaksa (ヤクシャ) is a secondary antagonist in Saiyuki: Journey West. He is the one of the first spiritual entities to join the Devil Eight and was formerly a god of the spiritual realm before he became a Devil.

Role in Game[]

Sanzo and his group go to Firetop to find the Guardian, but Yaksa tries to attack them. Yaksa demands the Guardians and staff, but when Sanzo hesitates, Yaksa attacks them. After Yaksa is defeated, he overhears Deva's secret and tells Asura. Asura orders Yaksa to create a trap for Sanzo at Thunder Temple. Yaksa destroys the city and waits for Sanzo. When Sanzo arrives, Yaksa attacks him but is beaten. Yaksa is sent back to Heaven and doesn't appear again.

Personality[]

Malevolent and brutal, Yaksa is a violent upstart who doesn't believe in pity. He doesn't trust Deva to follow Asura's plans with gusto and criticizes the former's loyalty. Arrogant with his powers, he believes he can take down anything with might alone.

Fighting Style[]

In the first encounter with Yaksa, Sanzo and the party members get separated. Sanzo is on the west island while Kikka, Ryorin, and Hakkai go to the east island. Goku and Gojo are stuck on land, facing a horde of monsters on the eastern side. A floating rock moves across the lava, dividing everyone, but it only moves once per turn. Players must time when they want the four stranded members to cross the boiling river. They will lose ten hit points each complete turn cycle due to the heat.

Yaksa remains in the top corner of the map and rarely moves unless characters approach. He primarily uses Rock Drop or Rock Guard, but the damage is not too severe. His physical attack also has a low chance of hitting. The main challenge of this fight is reaching Yaksa and dealing with his minions. With patience, he can be defeated without much difficulty.

Yaksa's true form can randomly paralyze, poison, or petrify nearby targets, but he lacks strength. Recovery from his attacks is easy. His regular attack is stronger, particularly against close-range fighters. Overall, he's not a formidable opponent and can be easily defeated.
