The Battle of Mt. Xingshi was a battle between Wei and Shu. Cao Shuang attempted to use the campaign to bolster his popularity, but his defeat only served to cause his eventual downfall.
Role in Games[]
Dynasty Warriors[]
In Dynasty Warriors 7, Sima Zhao is ordered to attack the enemy's supply depot, but a messenger arrives confirming that Cao Shuang has fallen victim to a raid. The battle's objective changes, and Cao Shuang must be escorted to the escape point. As the Wei troops leave the mountain, Guan Suo appears to ambush them, and more reinforcements from Shu appear to surround the Wei troops. Defeating Ma Dai will allow the retreat to be completed.
In Dynasty Warriors 8, Sima Yi decides to send his family out in his stead. Cao Shuang's first order is to attack the enemy camp at the mountain. After passing through the first gate, the Shu troops launch a fire attack, and Cao Shuang must be rescued. Wang Ping closes the gates for the mountain's summit, and more Shu troops spring out at the byroads. Liao Hua orders a ballista to attack the Wei troops, while boulder throwers prevent an advance.
In Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends expansion, the location is reused for Shu and Wei's stories. In Wei's storyline, the area is searched to find missing Cai Wenji, but the Wei troops repeatedly encounter other "beauties" alongside their loved ones. Three kidnappers, three beauties, merchants, merchants, beauties, and a final beauty appear in a garrison near the main camp. Defeating the officers that have invaded the main camp will end the stage.
Warriors Orochi[]
In the third game of Warriors Orochi, Ginchiyo Tachibana searches for Muneshige Tachibana, bringing Xiaoqiao and Sun Shangxiang. Da Ji attacks the coalition, but they defeat him. The coalition returns to Xuchang, and Liu Shan, Xingcai, and Nene work to divert Jiang Wei's attention. Zhong Hui attacks the coalition, allowing Jiang Wei to escape. In the ultimate game, the mirror realm's Mt. Xingshi battles Cao Cao, Yuan Shao, and Kyūbi. Kanbei's plan involves defeating Jia Xu, who is then sent a fake messenger to break the alliance. Keiji Maeda and Okuni are defeated, and Yuan Shao and Okuni are recruited to Kyūbi's army.
Historical Information[]
In 244, Cao Shuang promoted Sima Yi to Grand Tutor, allowing him to hand over his military power to Cao Fang. Cao Shuang launched a campaign against Shu, choosing the Baoxie trail for the western path and the Ziwu trail for the longest. However, he made a mistake by choosing the central path, Tangluo trail, which had the worst road conditions and least water sources. Wang Ping predicted a logistics problem for Shu, but the Wei army suffered heavy losses due to supplies alone. Wang Ping prepared to switch to the offensive when Fei Yi arrived with fresh troops from Chengdu. Cao Shuang's staff officer, Yang Wei, petitioned for the campaign to be aborted, but his protégés, Deng Yang and Li Feng, refuted him. Guo Huai retreated, and Sima Yi sent a letter to Xiahou Xuan, citing Cao Shuang's previous failure. Cao Shuang's humiliating defeat lost his popularity, and Sima Yi later launched his coup. The battle is often overlooked by ancient historians, but the losses for Wei would prolong the Three Kingdoms period and indirectly lead to growing insurrections in the Guanzhong area.
