Pang Tong (onyomi: Hō Tō) was a short lived military strategist for Liu Bei who was one of the notable figures in helping his lord seize Yi Province. He is sometimes addressed as "The Fledgling Phoenix" (鳳雛), the clashing opposite of the "Sleeping Dragon". He is well-known for having odd appearance and snide personality were said to repulse the lords in the Three Kingdoms era, however this is nothing but pure fiction invented by the author of Romance of the Three Kingdoms with no basis in reality. Regardless, Pang Tong was a clever mind who was as kindhearted out of practicality, though he didn't share his friend Zhuge Liang's affinity for administration affairs.

His Dynasty Warriors incarnation is forty-fourth place in Gamecity's Dynasty Warriors 7 character popularity poll and fifty-ninth in the Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends poll. The latest poll for the eighth installment puts him in sixty-first. The character poll for overseas fans puts him in tenth place for the Shu division.

His character's height in Kessen II is 165 cm (5'5").

Role in Games

"You soar above us like a glorious phoenix!"
~~Ina; Warriors Orochi

Dynasty Warriors

Known as a genius who matches Zhuge Liang's intelligence, Pang Tong joins the resistance against Wei sometime before Chi Bi. In most of the games, he works as a mole within Cao Cao's army at Chi Bi and suggests for the boats to be chained together. His tactics increases the damage of the imperative fire attack. Formally joining Liu Bei soon after, he is the one who suggests for his liege to attack Liu Zhang. Unless players are playing his story or they neglect his safety at Cheng Du, Pang Tong often dies due to Zhang Ren's ambush.

In Dynasty Warriors 3, he makes his appearance at Cheng Du where he usually perishes as a result of Zhang Ren's ambush. If players go through Pang Tong's Musou Mode, he will take over Huang Zhong's place at Yi Ling and Wei Yan's place at Wu Zhang Plains.

His Legend Mode in Dynasty Warriors 4: Xtreme Legends has him challenge Zhuge Liang for the title of the army's master strategist. Even with Pang Tong's genius, he is still only seen as "second best" to his colleague. Hoping to prove his worth in their battle, he wants to demonstrate that he is truly better than Zhuge Liang.

Dynasty Warriors Advance has Pang Tong siege Luo Castle in place of his lord. As he advances, he is ambushed by Zhang Ren's men and has to be rescued. Regardless if he survives the ambush or not, the vassal's peril rouses Liu Bei into action and pushes him to attack Liu Zhang men. If Pang Tong is successfully rescued, he will cause a rockslide to stall Ma Chao and Ma Dai's reinforcements.

Dynasty Warriors 5 describes Pang Tong as a scholar who once studied with Zhuge Liang. He was first recruited by Wu but his dull countenance and eccentric appearance made him unpopular. Before the Battle of Chi Bi, he went to Liu Bei and Zhuge Liang, who knows his colleague's talents, invited him under his sovereign's service. At Chi Bi, he knocks out the central boats connecting the armies together, gathering Cao Cao's army in one place. His plans gained him recognition and he becomes the main commander at Jing Province in place of Zhuge Liang. Claiming a resounding victory at Cheng Du, Pang Tong sees their chance to expand and directs Liu Bei to capture Han Zhong at the Battle of Mt. Ding Jun. With the Shu kingdom established, Liu Bei suddenly passes away with his ambitions unfulfilled. Touched by his lord's vision, Pang Tong works together with his fellow strategist to fulfill it. After the Nanman tribe surrenders, both geniuses decide to take out both kingdoms at once. Zhuge Liang engages Wei at Wu Zhang Plains and Pang Tong leads the simultaneous defense against Wu at Bai Di Castle. Both strategists are victorious in their campaigns and the land is united under Shu. Pang Tong despite contemplating how much blood had to be split for the land to realize its state, lives the rest of his life upholding his lord's dream of a land at peace being proud of his achievements.

In the Xtreme Legends expansion, Pang Tong shares his Legend Mode with Zhang Jiao and Zuo Ci. A year before the Yellow Turban Rebellion takes place, the three men compete to obtain the mystical book, The Way of Peace, with Pang Tong's intentions of wanting to spread its wisdom throughout the land to help it prosper.

Pang Tong's ending scene in Dynasty Warriors: Online has him decide to leave his faction now that the war is over. Before departing from the town, he is greeted by the player who wishes to join him much to his amazement.

He continues to act as a contributing figure in Chi Bi and Cheng Du in the sixth title. In Wei's version of Chi Bi, he chains Wei's boats together and defects later in the battle. If Zhuge Liang is defeated, Pang Tong acts as his substitute and calls upon the winds. Players may choose to keep him alive in his other battle.

As opposed to attacking Chengdu like other titles, Liu Bei absolutely refuses to listen to Pang Tong's advice in Dynasty Warriors 7 and forbids his men from attacking Liu Zhang. Whether his lord agrees to the attack or not, the strategist knows the people of Yi Province are in support of Liu Bei and feels it's necessary to remove Liu Zhang. Respecting Liu Bei's wish to avoid attacking Chengdu at least, Pang Tong instead covertly gathers a small group of the Shu army to attack Liu Zhang's stronghold at Luo Castle. Both he and Fa Zheng coordinate the troops for the battle. Pang Tong suffers an arrow wound by Zhang Ren's soldiers while passing through the southern valley, but he perseveres for Liu Zhang's retreat. After they take the castle, Liu Bei begins to state his protest but is quickly surprised to hear the citizens' grateful cheers. Pang Tong passes away from his wounds suffered soon after, entrusting the title of strategist to Zhuge Liang.

Pang Tong's first Legendary Battle has him attack Luo Castle by himself, pushing through Liu Zhang's army using brute force. He has a chance to defy his death by defeating Zhang Ren and claims victory once Wu Yi is defeated. His second Legendary Battle has him and Zhuge Liang unite their talents to defeat Cao Cao and his army sometime after Chibi.

He is given a brief but vital role in the seventh chapter of Dynasty Warriors Next. Recruited by Zhuge Liang after the fall of Xiangyang, Pang Tong attempts to convince Liu Bei that attacking Liu Zhang is the best course of action they have in order to gain Yi Province as their own. When Liu Bei still hesitates to attack his relative, the strategist decides to take a more active approach by leading an assault on Luo Castle. After clearing the path for his allies, he is shot from behind by Liu Xun's archers. His death strengthens Liu Bei's resolve to fight Liu Zhang, resulting in the formation of Shu.

In Dynasty Warriors 8, Pang Tong reprises his role from previous installments and he is given the role of chaining the Wei fleet together at the Battle of Chibi. He is discovered by Wei forces due to Xu Shu's defection to Wei. In the Wei hypothetical route the linked ship strategy will fail, but in Shu's version of the battle Pang Tong is rescued by Liu Bei, Zhuge Liang and Zhao Yun, and they defeat Zhang Liao and Xu Shu in time to launch the fire attack successfully.

Averting Pang Tong's death during the conflict at Chengdu is one of the requirements needed to unlock Shu's hypothetical route. If his death is averted, he will participate in the battle of Mt Dingjun. When Xu Shu arrives at Fan Castle, Pang Tong will later arrive with Ma Dai and Ma Chao as reinforcements as well as Zhang Jiao and the remnants of the Yellow Turbans, thus saving Guan Yu from death. Pang Tong then travels with Wei Yan to Chang'an to launch a surprise attack on Wei. Encountering Jiang Wei, he convinces the young strategist to come to Shu, having been abandoned by his allies. He later appears as a reinforcement at Luoyang. He joins the final battle at Xuchang and advises Liu Shan and Zhao Yun to cut off side entrances to prevent Wei reinforcements.

In Wei's story, Pang Tong's chaining of the ships will be stopped by Xu Shu during the hypothetical version of Chibi.

Dynasty Warriors: Unleashed has Pang Tong play a prominent role in the Chibi campaign as he and the player are entrusted with chaining Cao Cao's warships together to magnify the Alliance's fire attack. It takes them two separate attempts to make the plan work while dealing with interlopers in the form of Xu Shu and Xu Zhu. His death during the Chengdu campaign is repeated.

Pang Tong's bond story emphasizes his good judge of character, something Sima Hui takes notice while taking him in as a student. He correctly estimates the strengths of Wu's scholars while paying his respects to the late Zhou Yu and is taken more seriously by Liu Bei thanks to Lu Su vouching for him. Now able to put his talents to good use, he provides three different strategies in conquering Liu Zhang's domain. Although the campaign results in his death, he is content to have lived it the way he wanted to.

In Dynasty Warriors 9, Pang Tong was enjoying a life of seclusion for his studies when he was contacted by Zhuge Liang. Although he initially only wanted to meet just for old time's sake, he is surprised to find his old friend employed by Liu Bei as well as being asked to help against Cao Cao's southern invasion. In the allied side of the opening skirmish between the allied forces and Cao Cao, Pang Tong will ask for help in sending in poisoned wine to Cao Cao's forces in order to make them sickly. He later asks for assistance in trying to influence Cao Cao into realizing he needs to do something to alleviate the seasickness his troops are suffering from during the battle. Despite interference from Yu Jin and Cai Wenji, Pang Tong is able to encourage the Wei forces into chaining their ships together to cure their seasickness, then offers them some extra wine when they thank him to keep them further off-balance. In the Wei scenario, he appears shortly after getting some seasickness medicine from a village nearby during the preparations for the battle, and suggests that if they really want to cure their ill state, just chain their ships together, and the Wei forces fall for it.

Once Cao Cao is defeated by the allied forces at the main battle at Chibi, Pang Tong joins his friend's campaign of capturing Jing's southern cities while Sun Quan and Cao Cao's men are locked down at Nanjun. They are able to take the cities with ease, but the Wu forces soon become disgruntled thanks to being left empty-handed by this move. Nonetheless they are able to placate Sun Quan's forces for the time being to launch their attack on Liu Zhang's territory under Fa Zheng's advise and Pang Tong's encouragement.

Before they launch their attack, Pang Tong opts to go out after sensing something strange with their marching path. To aid him, he is lent Hex Mark. As he expects, he encounters a trap set up by Zhang Ren designed for Liu Bei. Unwilling to die so quickly, Pang Tong continues his flight, remembering the duty he and Zhuge Liang share to Liu Bei. Ultimately, he is eventually shot down, with Zhang Ren personally disarming Pang Tong of his weapon before his archers shoot down Hex Mark and fatally wound Pang Tong, though he is content to have at least been able to suffer such a fate in the stead of his lord, while Hex Mark is able to recover and return to Liu Bei. Pang Tong's death also leaves Ma Chao deeply upset at having let it happen in the first place while trying to capture Luo Castle.

Warriors Orochi

In the first game, Pang Tong appears in Wei's story as a strategist for Xiahou Dun and Xiahou Yuan. He sends engineers to build a bridge over a nearby river to lead directly into the enemy main camp. If this plan is thwarted, he will retreat to the stone sentinel maze with an ambush party, creating clones of himself to confuse the player. If confronted with Cao Pi, he will claim that he's not willing to work for Orochi. When Cao Pi stresses that he wants Pang Tong to work for him, Pang Tong agrees. He is among the officers who appear in Wei's ending to support Cao Pi over Cao Cao.

Pang Tong stays with Wei in Warriors Orochi 2. He stays with Cao Pi to defend the main headquarters and he aids the prince in spurring Wu into action by invading Nanzhong. After they successfully have Sun Jian return to the war, Pang Tong and the rest of Cao Pi's forces spring into action when Kiyomori and the newly resurrected Orochi attack them at Komaki-Nagakute. To counter the Orochi army offensive, Pang Tong circles around the main actions on the battlefield and forces the enemy troops to crowd in the center. He then unleashes a fire attack on them, dropping the morale of Kiyomori's troops. Zhang Jiao and Zuo Ci team with him for their dream stage. They desire to prove the superiority of sorcery to the ninpo (ninja magic) from Nene's army. He is the one who reveals the hidden Kunoichi on the field.

Musou OROCHI Z has him participate in another dream stage with San Zang and Toshiie. He supports both of them at Anegawa. During the stage, he will find a stranded Zhang Bao and will lead allied troops to rescue him.

Pleased with Orochi's second defeat, Pang Tong retired for years and sought to live a life of solitude in Warriors Orochi 3. Wanting to once again have his talents for their cause, Zhuge Liang and his party later locate the strategist heavily surrounded by the serpent forces at Komaki-Nagakute. Once the small group of reinforcements rescue him, Pang Tong quickly initiates the fire attack he planned in advance to reverse the tide of battle to their favor. Realizing that the wars are not over, Pang Tong reluctantly leaves his days of leisure to assist the coalition.

On a side mission of Chapter 4 in Ultimate, he along with Seimei Abe and Zhuge Liang established a special training for Xu Shu, Zhuge Dan, and Kanetsugu Naoe. A double of Pang Tong was also used by Tamamo to deceive Zhang Fei's forces into attacking Cao Cao at Mt. Niutou.

Wandering the new land in Warriors Orochi 4 alongside Lu Su and Hanbei Takenaka, the trio are caught within the crossfire of Ares and Cao Pi's forces and the Coalition army at Chibi. Upon being rescued by Zhuge Liang, the four strategists proceed to make a simultaneous archer barrage and fire attack on Ares and his allies. After their victory, all three accompany Zhuge Liang back to Liu Bei.

Pang Tong and Yoshitsugu Ōtani later appear in one of the side stages at Okehazama as one of the "Mysteries of the World", posing as ghosts to prank Masanori Fukushima.

Kessen

In Kessen II, Pang Tong is introduced as Zhuge Liang's brother-in-law. Unlike his Dynasty Warriors counterpart, he doesn't wear a mask and is portrayed as a young, intelligent slacker who loves to drink. After he joins, he acts as a cunning military and political adviser. He is a good magician but doesn't have a strong military stat or defense. To balance out his strength, he usually leads an archery unit and acts as a secondary general for Liu Bei, Sun Li, or Mei Sanniang. He may also swear brotherhood with Ma Su.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Within the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series, Pang Tong is depicted as an incredible strategist and possesses one of the highest intelligence stats among officers of the series, often a few points short of Zhuge Liang while also possessing good marks at politics and leadership making him effective for both domestic and battle duties. Found initially around northern Jing Province just prior to Liu Biao's death, Pang Tong will later migrate to Chaisang as a free officer and serve within Sun Quan's ranks before transferring his services to Liu Bei after Zhou Yu's death. Pang Tong is a confidant for several figures from both Sun Quan and Liu Bei's forces which include Zhou Yu, Quan Cong, Zhang Fei, Xu Shu and Zhuge Liang.

The fourteenth instalment bequeaths Pang Tong the unique trait, Young Phoenix which lowers the success rate of any enemy tactics that inflict status ailments within a specific range of his unit. In reference to his time as an appraiser, Pang Tong possesses the Recruiter trait which shortens the period of time required for him to search cities and recruit officers.

Personality

Nihilistic, vain, and sometimes smarmy, Pang Tong is someone who spares sweet talk and stays focused on the heart of the matter. While he seeks practical solutions that grants the best results, his blunt statements may sometimes make him unpopular with others. Even so, his heart is in the right place and he is a bit playful; with each little insult that he may let slip, Pang Tong mends it with well-meaning advice as well as being more openly casual with others. While he may not always show it, he is just as loyal to his liege as any other member within Liu Bei's army. In the Asian script, he speaks in a particularly sleazy and loose tone with an archaic dialect.

He is good friends with Zhuge Liang and is one of the few in Shu who can talk as his intellectual equal, as well as being his loose-mouthed and less-cryptic foil to Zhuge Liang's more quiet and poker-faced nature. He sympathizes with Wei Yan and encourages his companion to stay true to his beliefs, which is also something he does different compared to Zhuge Liang (as he doesn't often trust Wei Yan) while also telling Xu Shu directly to be more confident with himself.

During the Warriors Orochi series, he grows fond of Cao Pi and praises the younger man's accomplishments. He also offers special praise to Hanzō, Kunoichi, Mitsunari, Yoshimoto, and Hanbei. In the fourth installment, he gets along with Yoshitsugu Ōtani and Lu Su.

Character Symbolism

In the Japanese version of Dynasty Warriors 4: Empires, Pang Tong is given the nickname of "Intellectual Black Bird" while the English version changes it to "The Phoenix of Chaos". As a dominant ruler in Dynasty Warriors 5: Empires, he calls his five greatest warriors the "Five Phoenix Generals".

His original name for his Level 11 Weapon is named after the Fenghuang, a mythological beast originating from China. Though identified as the "Chinese phoenix", it is actually closer to a chimera by definition since its body is composed of various body parts of other animals. Commonly known as the lord of all birds and a wind god, its feathers grant living beings the power to become rulers of the land. It is a positive entity of power, benevolence, virtue, and justice often paired with the dragon as a female counterpart, often having its five main body parts associated with one different virtue each in nods to Confucius' teachings. A guardian beast for rulers, it ensures prosperity for an era's rule if it is seen beside a person of power. Princes who are highly intelligent are also said to have been born with a fenghuang's protection, the namesake of Pang Tong's famous moniker. The Fenghuang is a member of the Four Spirits whom once protected the Jade Emperor's gardens, working together with the Qilin (a tiger-like beast standing for faith), Ling'gui (tortoise who displayed good or bad fortunes), and Yinglong (dragon who foretold changes). The Four Spirits are said to either be the inspiration or deviation of the Four Gods in mythology due to their similar characteristics. As a side note, the Fenghuang is the symbol for Wei within the Dynasty Warriors series, as well as originally being two separate beings during the Han Dynasty via the male-only Feng and the female-only Huang.

Pang Tong's weapons are usually named after elements of the wind or illusions, which continues for the Asian ports of Dynasty Warriors 6. His third, fourth, and Standard weapons mention a wind god in their titles, but it's not clear if it alludes to wind gods in general (風神, fūjin or kaze no kami) or the very Fūjin (風神), a Japanese elemental spirit. Fūjin is depicted as either an ominous supernatural entity or a god working together with his opposite, Raijin. He is usually depicted as a demonic man carrying a sack of wind over his shoulders. If he was angered, Fūjin would ride the currents of the wind and enter a person's orifices. Once inside, he would exhale a yellow tinted breeze from his mouth. During medieval Japan, it was believed foul stenches or the extreme temperatures of seasonal weather could enter a person's internals and make them sick; thus, Fūjin is known mainly as an entity that spreads illness. The phrase for warning someone of the common cold in Japanese, "[You'll] catch a cold" (風邪を引く, Kaze wo hiku), dates from the Edo Period and refers to this ancient belief of infections.

His personal item in Warriors Orochi is originally named "Water Mirror Silk". Water Mirror is the Taoist name for Sima Hui, a hermit who shared close ties with Pang Tong and his father. The particular silk awarded to Pang Tong is famous for having a glossy and shimmering shine to it, a prized fabric for collectors.

Keys: Square Flow Attack • Triangle Reactive Attack • Circle Musou X Jump/Mount

Pang Tong is affiliated with the shadow fan in this title. When equipped with it, Pang Tong can perform the following unique attacks listed below.

Unique Attacks
Unique Flow Attack Finisher: Enemy Downed + Square Square Square Square: Pang Tong's unique finisher for his downed flow attack involves drinking a flask of wine and spewing flames towards the enemies in front of him. The move leaves him momentarily drunk, making him slightly vulnerable to enemy attacks before recovering. This move is based on Pang Tong's first EX attack from more recent games.
Unique Trigger Attack: R1 + Square: Levitates in a sitting position, then spins around once to conjure a dizzying tornado.
Special Technique: R1 + Circle: Twirls weapon for a bit before doing a downward arcing slash with flames trailing it. The swing also produces a fireball traveling steadily on the ground before the airborne Pang Tong causes it to explode. Much of the animation was taken from his second EX attack in the previous installment, but has been repurposed into a full offensive move.
Musou Attack: Circle: Swings shadow fan back and forth repeatedly in an upward manner, causing it to produce small tornadoes in front of Pang Tong as he slowly steps forth. It ends with him conjuring a tall twister which he then briefly enlarges by sending out a circular swirl of wind. This move is based on his Rage attack from the previous game.
Aerial Musou Attack: X Circle: Twirls weapon in mid-air to send out a pair of wide green tornadoes that juggle foes below continuously while inflicting wind damage on them. The animation is derived from Pang Tong's Phoenix Wing Musou attack from the eighth title.
Horse Maneuvers
Summon Horse: L2: Summon horse to the battlefield. Holding L2 as the horse approaches will allow the character to automatically mount them.
Auto-Run: Riding Mode + L2: Automatically runs towards a specified destination. If a destination has not been set, the horse will instead run towards the location of the player's currently selected mission.
Sprint: Riding Mode + Direction + R1: Causes horse to run at a faster pace. Doing so depletes their stamina each time.
Jump: Riding Mode + Direction + R2: Causes horse to jump high while running.
Horse Fast Attack: Riding Mode + Square: Performs a fast and seamless attack while mounted. The attack itself varies depending on what type of weapon is equipped and whether the enemy is grounded or airborne.
Horse Trigger Attack: Riding Mode + Triangle: Performs an attack that sends enemies flying into the air. May vary depending on what type of weapon is equipped.
Horse Musou Attack: Riding Mode + Circle: Causes horse to sprint by consuming Musou instead of stamina.
Dismount Horse: Riding Mode + X: Dismounts from horse and resumes default fighting stance.
Bow Maneuvers
Shooting Mode: 🡻: Pulls out bow and assumes archery stance. Can be cancelled by tapping 🡻 again.
Switch Arrows: 🡸 or 🡺: Switches between different types of arrows.

Historical Information

Pang Tong, an adviser to Liu Bei during the Later Han period, was appointed as Master of the Army, but remained a poor administrator.

His most famous deed was recommending Liu Bei to follow one of three plans to seize the city of Yizhou: 1.) Request an audience with Yang Huai and Gao Pei, defenders of Boshui Pass, to leave for Jing, then arrest and kill them to gain control of their armies, 2.) Launch a surprise attack on the city, or, 3.) Go back to Jing and decide to seize Yizhou at another time. Of these, Pang Tong favored the second and thought the worst of the third, yet Liu Bei adopted the first plan. After finishing the tasks and absorbing Yang Huai and Gao Pei's armies, Liu Bei went on to besiege the city of Luo. During the siege, Pang Tong was killed by a stray arrow at the age of 36.

Liu Bei deeply mourned his death and Zhuge Liang paid respects at his tomb.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Pang Tong Illustration

Pang Tong from Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Pang Tong, a strategist and rival of Zhuge Liang, served Sun Quan and was recommended by Lu Su for a replacement. He was initially a menial administrative role but was eventually promoted to a strategist role and appointed Director General. He aided Zhuge Liang in the Riverlands plot and received congratulations from Liu Bei.

After taking Fu Pass, Liu Bei gave him a favorite horse for the invasion, as Pang Tong's own horse was said to be too wild to control. Right before fateful ambush, Pang Tong had Wei Yan lead the vanguard forward. Zhang Ren, however, ignored Wei Yan's unit, allowing them to safely pass without harm. When Pang Tong crossed the valley, he was mistaken for Liu Bei thanks to the warlord's horse. While crossing, he asked a local of the valley's name and was immediately horrified to learn that it was the "Valley of the Fallen Phoenix". When he attempted to have the troops turn back, Zhang Ren's archers launched a volley of arrows at him, killing the Director General. Wei Yan attempted to ride back and rescue Pang Tong, but was attacked by Wu Lan and Lei Tong and was forced to flee back to Liu Bei's camp.

Liu Bei wept for Pang Tong and then requested for reinforcements from Zhang Fei, Zhao Yun and Zhuge Liang to continue the campaign.

Also in this portrayal, Pang Tong was described as having dark skin and odd facial features, causing him to be deemed too ugly and at first rejected by Sun Quan for his services.
