"Musuhi" is the force driving a Mitama's natural growth and completion within ancient Shintoism.

The protagonist is a customizable avatar the player is required to create at the start of each game. Protagonists may "speak" through limited text options during story conversations, but they are mainly present to observe the drama of the NPCs around them. The first-person perspective seen in most pre-rendered cinematics is the protagonist's point of view.

Regardless of the player's choices in the story, their personality is generally described as humanistic and awe-inspiring.

Role in Games[]

Toukiden[]

The protagonist, a foreigner from eastern faraway lands, is chosen by the departed heroes to act as their gateway to the living. As a new recruit to Utakata Village, the protagonist earns their trust and becomes a trusted defender. The demons intensify their efforts, and the protagonist is promoted as the captain of their forces. They face a dimensional vortex with destructive powers, and the protagonist calls upon the souls of their comrades to close the gate. They become the "legendary innovator" or "demon" who can seal demons away.

The protagonist works with the northern forces to find and exterminate the "Eclipse Demon," an incorporeal entity that can summon endless waves of giant demons. They rescue Reki from an attack and find a cure for her. The "Eclipse Demon" is revealed to be part of the arcane evil Izuchikanata, destroying humanity's history for one thousand years. The protagonist saves the other residents and Slayers, slaying Izuchikanata within its own dimension of time.

Quiz Battle Toukiden[]

This protagonist is a faceless and amnesic player avatar. He/She rarely speaks except through text prompts. Certain responses suggests bias for a male protagonist though a clear gender for this protagonist has not been clarified within the script. Since they meet a lost Hatsuho, they come from a different time era from the other protagonists.

A mysterious protagonist emerges from ruined Akatsuki Village and helps Lady Akatsuki, a weak protagonist with the ability to harness multiple Mitama. They nurture the tree spirit and use their souls to defend themselves. After collapse, they join the Slayers, mentored by Ouka, Ibuki, and Nagi. The veteran slayers approve of their courage but are troubled by their power and unknown origins. Souma invites them to join the Hundred Demon Corps, and they leave Utakata Village together.

Toukiden Mononofu[]

The Slayer protagonist was once a youth who fought during the "Awakening" at Shinonome Village. They share the name of a legendary weapon creator who was said to have been devoured by the demons.

The protagonist, a bonded Mitama, is a commander in Shinonome's Slayer unit, despite facing demon attacks. He cannot bond with multiple Mitama but can hear and work with them through Botan. The village chief, a retired Slayer, is threatened by demons' miasma. The protagonist leads investigations and rescues Ōka and Ibuki, leading the authorities to consider a southern expedition to hasten their comrades' return to Utakata. The protagonist's resilience and determination help the village maintain their position.

Toukiden 2[]

The protagonist, a Slayer, is separated from their unit after being knocked out by a demon. Their unconscious body is found in a forest near Mahoroba Village. They learn ten years have passed since Yokohama and are offered housing by the Professor, who lies about their true origins.

Character Creation[]

Toukiden[]

Players can decide their character's name, gender, face structure, hairstyle, skin tone, and voice at the start of each game. These factors give no additional stat bonuses and are purely for cosmetic effect. There are twenty variations for face, hair, and voice; a color dropper is used for color editing. Players can continue to change their character's hairstyle any time during the game in their protagonist's house.

The protagonist's weaponry and armor can be altered at the player's whim. Currently equipped weapons are present on the character at all times. Armor increases defensive stats and changes a character's overall appearance in the game. Head wear, body armor, gauntlets, and leg armor are individual parts; they can be mixed to the player's preferences. Equipment can be altered at the village exit or the protagonist's house. Equipment macros can be decided and named by the player if they desire to quickly swap between weapons/armor.

In the village's start menu, the player can check their protagonist's personal stats (fourth option in start menu, last option in sub menu). It serves as a quick reference of the player's accomplishments and preferences. If the player is in a team or has created additional protagonists, this feature can be used to check between multiple accounts. Seven subsections are included:

  1. Multiplayer Profile: lists character title, name, and player message. Title and message can be edited by player. Stats for log-in times and times for online missions completed are kept here.
  2. Strengths: protagonist's currently equipped weaponry, Mitama, skills, and armor.
  3. Play Stats: play time and total number of collectibles obtained. Lists whatever accomplishments and number of missions are completed with currently selected protagonist.
  4. Mitama: stats for whatever Mitama the player has collected. Shows how many times a Mitama has been equipped as the protagonist's main and how many times their abilities have been used successfully.
  5. Duty: mission and side objective stats. Includes fastest completion time and number of times a mission has been attempted. Side objectives tab simply records the ones which the player have cleared with the currently selected protagonist.
  6. Kill Record: for demons of all sizes. Checks whether the protagonist has completely dismantled a demon's parts during a mission and keeps track of how many parts the protagonist has personally chopped off.
  7. Popular Usage: bar graphs for protagonist's used weaponry, fighting style (Mitama type), and NPC Slayer comrades. Exact numbers and percentages for each subject are kept.

Toukiden 2[]

Toukiden Mononofu[]

Voice Actors[]

Titles[]

Players can unlock personal titles for themselves by completing certain objectives in the game. These titles are present for players who wish to alter their multiplayer profile and offer no bonuses or rewards for using them.
