The Battle of Puyang (濮陽の戦い, rōmaji: Hokuyō no Tatakai) was fought between Cao Cao and Lu Bu from 194 to 195. Zhang Miao and Chen Gong invited Lu Bu to take over Yan Province while Cao Cao was away fighting Tao Qian. In the novel, the battle is used to display Chen Gong's great intellect.

Role in Games[]

In Dynasty Warriors 5: Xtreme Legends, the siege known as the "Battle of Yan Province" is a Legend mode stage for Lu Bu, Diao Chan, and Zhang Liao. Chen Gong is stationed within Pu Yang castle, waiting for Lu Bu's army to surround the castle's gates. If Lu Bu's men surround the castle quickly, Chen Gong will defect and open the gates. If not, Cao Cao will appear, and Chen Gong will exit the battlefield.

In Dynasty Warriors 8, the trio rescues Xun Yu from Lu Bu's assault and retakes Puyang Castle. However, Chen Gong orders an ambush unit and Zhang Miao arrives with reinforcements for Lu Bu. The player must defeat Hou Cheng, opening the main gate and allowing Cao Cao's men to infiltrate the castle.

In the expansion, Lu Bu's forces are located at the southwest corner, and Chen Gong convinces tribal lords to side against him. Cao Cao's initial wave of reinforcements arrives, and the tribal lords are convinced to defect. If the plan succeeds, Zhang Miao traps Cao Cao at Puyang castle, and Guo Jia and Dian Wei guard the escape point. Defeating Cao Cao ends the stage.

Historical Information[]

In 193, Cao Cao's father was killed by Zhang Kai, leading to the besiegement of Tao. Lu Bu, a wandering warrior, took Yan Province but couldn't capture Juancheng, Dong'e, and Fan counties. Cao Cao canceled his invasion and prepared for a siege at Puyang. Despite initial failures, Cao Cao used siege weapons and defeated Zhang Chao and Zhang Miao. The Tian family defected to Cao Cao's side, and Cao Cao was captured by Lu Bu's men. After being released, Cao Cao continued the siege, eventually fleeing to Liu Bei.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms[]

In Chapter 12, Chen Gong convinces a noble to fake a defection, leading to Cao Cao's defection. Lu Bu attacks, cutting off retreat routes and setting fire. Cao feigns ignorance, allowing Lu Bu to release him. Cao Cao's horse is killed, but Xiahou Yuan and Dian Wei help him escape. The battle follows historical events.
