Shūsui (秋水, Shuusui) is a secondary character who resides in Utakata Village. The player can normally find him to the far right of the receptionist.

Role in Games[]

Shūsui works for the "Slayers" who protect humanity from demons. He is their private agent sent to oversee Utakata Village. He studies demons and uses his research to offer strategies to protect the village. Shūsui plans with Yamato or Kikka in advance and reveals them only when he thinks it's right. His plans include strengthening the priestess's barrier, locating the portal which could start another "Awakening", and discouraging rescue missions to focus on their defenses.

Shūsui was born in the north of Nakatsu Kuni. Eight years ago, he saw service in the "Awakening" when the dimensional portal opened in his homeland. The Slayers tried to defend it but were overwhelmed. Kuyou, the leader of the expedition, chose to abandon the north, resulting in the annihilation of the northern villages. Shūsui escaped by navigating the caverns found within gaps of the demonic realm. Shūsui privately researches for a method of saving those lost in the north.

The protagonist and his/her compassion for the other Slayers perks Shūsui's interest in him/her. After spending the majority of the main story hinting about his master plan to him/her, he finally feels confident sharing it with the Slayers right before they depart to close the second giant portal. The researcher postulates that they can use the demonic gateway to travel back in time to redo the past, reasoning that it is a possible reality due to the portal's massive manipulation of space-time. Although the prospect initially sounds promising, the Slayers decline since they treasure the present.

Having predicted their response, Shūsui acquiesces defeat. The researcher earnestly places his trust in them to save humanity from another "Awakening".

In the game "Kiwami," Shūsui's plans are stopped by the Sacred Mountain in Utakata. He is part of a secret group called the Way of the Moon and Sun, who study demons. He spies on Utakata Village but stops his mission to focus on researching space-time travel. He lets other Slayers fight in his arenas to study demon fragments. Shūsui helps the Slayers rescue their friends from Chaos and confronts Kuyou about his plans. He asks Kuyou to stop and promises to save the protagonist. His words make Kuyou change his mind.

When his soul is being consumed by Izuchikanata, he hallucinates the destruction of the north. The panic-stricken scholar tells the protagonist to flee at once. He recovers and resumes his research.

Personality[]

Shūsui is a realist who doesn't like to bond with others. He makes clever comments that seem playful, but they actually criticize relying on emotions. The Slayers reluctantly follow his plans for the greater good and see him as a schemer who can't be stopped. Even though he's okay with being ignored by the Slayers, he's touched by their friendship. He wishes the protagonist was there to save the north and feels bad about the past but hopeful for the future.

In "Kiwami," we learn that Shūsui and Rinne are old friends who have the same background from eight years ago. He helps Shiranui by giving secret information and still hates Kuyou for his past actions and behavior in Utakata Village. He's only polite to Kuyou because of the protagonist's influence.

Requests[]

The protagonist can complete his chain of personal requests to greatly boost their affinity ratings with him. His requests are clearly labeled with his name in each posting. They must be completed in consecutive order.

Function[]

Shūsui provides the in-game encyclopedia. He updates entries based on the player's progress through the main story or their exploits in hunts.

  1. Missions: available chapter 7 in Kiwami. Infinite Missions allows players to fight multiple demons that gradually grow in strength with more kills. Chapter 10 grants Special Expeditions, a showdown between five/six random giant demons that are challenged in consecutive order. He rewards haku and forging steel for enhancing equipment.
  2. Personages: character profiles and full body renders for Slayers and town only NPCs. Information changes by completing a character's event in the main story. Place to check intimacy with characters; orange titles found underneath a character's name means they have reached the highest possible affinity rating with the protagonist.
  3. Demons: biographies and full body renders for whatever demons the player has personally vanquished. Includes any variations for small or giant types.
  4. Areas: descriptions of the hunting grounds. Relatively the same as the ones found on the official website.
  5. Glossary: brief explanations for jargon or locations the player hears about in the main story.
