Ship customization returns in New Horizons albeit with more vessels, figureheads, and guns to choose from. Different regions now have their own unique selection of ships, both new and used. Different materials can be used to construct hulls like in the first game, but only certain ships are suitable for some of them. Also, it takes time for a new ship to be built, making used ones more appealing for those who have immediate need for additional vessels.

When deciding what kind of ship to buy, players should consider whether or not to choose models that come with oars. Unlike sails, oars allow ships to propel without relying on wind power.

Below is a list of traits that define a ship's performance in the game.

Resources Description
Fleet Icon 1 (UW2) Tacking Represents ease in tacking and handling efficiency.
Fleet Icon 2 (UW2) Power Indicates the ship's power in propelling forward.
Fleet Icon 3 (UW2) Durability The endurance of a vessel. Wears out over time.
Fleet Icon 4 (UW2) Load Current and maximum capacity of all objects.
Fleet Icon 5 (UW2) Crew Current and maximum capacity of crewmen.
Fleet Icon 6 (UW2) Health Condition The crew's overall health condition. Suffers from the effects of scurvy and hunger. Dwindles rapidly when health is below 20, causing affected sailors to die off.
Fleet Icon 6 (UWG)
Trade Icon 1 (UW2) Cargo Current and maximum capacity of cargo and supplies.
Fleet Icon 7 (UW2) Speed Gauges speed in knots. Increases if cargo is light.
Fleet Icon 8 (UW2) Guns Current and maximum capacity of guns.
