Wang Yi (onyomi: Ō I) is one of the few women of the Later Han Dynasty who is noted to have historically fought in battle. She is best known for joining her husband's struggle against Ma Chao.

In Famitsu's character survey, she placed eighth in the girlfriend category. She ranked thirteenth place in Gamecity's Dynasty Warriors 8: Xtreme Legends popularity poll. The latest poll for the eighth installment puts her in eighteenth. The character poll for overseas fans puts her in fourth place for the Wei division. This counterpart has a character image song titled Endless Sorrow.

Role in Games[]

Dynasty Warriors[]

Wang Yi, a lone survivor of the Wang family, seeks revenge against Ma Chao, a sworn enemy. She volunteers to join Cao Cao in an attack on Shu at Xiping Gate. Wang Yi faces Ma Chao herself but fails to kill him. After the battle, Sima Yi compliments her exploits and encourages her to celebrate. Wang Yi offers her support to kill Ma Chao in the future.

Wang Yi appears in Dynasty Warriors Next as a playable officer during Wei's final chapter. Wu and Shu's scenarios have her defend Pingyuan, a choke point territory leading to other areas within Wei.

In Dynasty Warriors 8, Wang Yi first appears in Tong Gate serving under Cao Cao as one of his officers. She relishes the thought of crossing blades with Ma Chao personally after his initial duel with Xu Zhu ends in a stalemate. Her other appearances in Wei include the battle of Mt. Dingjun on the historical route and the pursuit at Nanjun on the fictional path. She also appears in the final battle at Baidi Castle, where she assists in the southern assault.

In Wu's hypothetical path, Wang Yi sends a false letter to Guan Yu and Zhang Fei, telling them that Sun Shangxiang has betrayed Liu Bei and plans on fighting him with Wu. Using the confusion to her advantage, she attacks both Wu and Shu at Jiangxia.

In the expansion, Wang Yi has two playable appearances in Wei's new hypothetical stages. In "Defense of Chang'an", she assists Jia Xu and Xu Huang in protecting the city from Ma Chao and his allies. The other scenario "Battle of Zitong" has her participate in Xiahou Yuan's assault on the area with Zhang He as they face off against their rivals from Shu.

In Dynasty Warriors: Unleashed, Wang Yi appears at Mt. Dingjun as an enemy general protecting Wei's supply stockpile. Her defeat is essential in order to move towards the final battle with Xiahou Yuan.

Wang Yi's own bond story starts off at her lowest point. Forced to live under the roof of her hated enemy Liang Shuang, she wards off his advances by neglecting her hygiene and attempting suicide. She only refrains from killing herself when thinking about her husband and daughter. Just as she wills herself to survive, Ma Chao's forces attack the city. This spurs Wang Yi into joining the front lines and even offering her jewelry as a reward to boost morale. However, her efforts are wasted as Wei Kang's negotiation for peace is treated as an official surrender by Ma Chao who invades the region.

With her son Zhao Yue made a hostage of the Ma clan, Wang Yi becomes more driven then ever to take matters into her own hands. She begins her plot by falsely befriending Lady Yang to lower Ma Chao's guard, giving her allies enough room to make their move when the time comes. After casting him out of Jicheng, the conspirators correctly assume he would seek refuge from Zhang Lu. Wang Yi willingly sells her property to fund an expedition to Mt. Qi in hopes of completing her ultimate revenge against Ma Chao.

In Dynasty Warriors 9, Wang Yi first appears in Wei's chapter 7 of which she leads the defense of Chang'an. She apologizes to both Cao Cao and Xiahou Yuan for allowing Ma Chao to get to Tong Gate. She retains her previous role at Hanzhong in Wei's side of the battle, and is one of the few quietly mourning the late Cao Cao.

After Cao Pi ascends to the throne, he orders a large-scale invasion of Shu with five armies. Wang Yi and Cai Wenji are sent to take Xiping gate from Ma Chao and Ma Dai in order to open the path for the northern tribes to advance. Despite scoring a major victory against the Shu forces, Wu's resumption of relations with Shu ends the campaign prematurely. Upon returning back to Wei, Cao Xiu announces to her that the banquet being held would be for her honor. After questioning if he could keep up with her, the duo head for the banquet. The scene changes to night and shows Wei soldiers and Cao Xiu all passed out on the floor, inferred that they drank too much and passed out. Wang Yi is the lone warrior still drinking as she looks at the night sky. She laments on how she will never escape her nightmare and how she wishes to see Ma Chao once again.

After her story, she lives past Ma Chao and Cao Pi's deaths, and helps Sima Yi defend Wei's western front during Zhuge Liang's first set of northern campaigns. Her final appearance will have her accompany the Wei forces for Zhuge Liang's final northern campaign at Wuzhang Plains.

In Cao Pi's personal DLC scenario, Wang Yi will remain at Wei's western frontier during their invasion of Shu. In the campaign for Hanzhong, which is guarded by Ma Chao, she is given permission to help lead the final battle of the region and is finally allowed to have her vengeance with Ma Chao's death leaving Hanzhong back in Wei's hands. Now free from her personal demons, Wang Yi continues to loyally follow Cao Pi in his final campaign against Liu Shan.

After Shu's fall, she is able to scout Lu Xun's party attempting to escape back to Jianye after their defeat at Chibi. Thanks to this, the Wei forces are able to catch and kill the strategist, leaving Wu without a proper commander to defend itself with. After Wu's annexation, she and the rest of the Wei generals are called upon by Cao Pi and ordered to do what they see fit should their ruler fall prematurely.

Warriors Orochi[]

Wang Yi is enslaved by Kiyomori's sorcery and, hoping to attack Ma Chao, confronts the coalition at Nagashino in Warriors Orochi 3. Sima Yi and company break the spell, but her desire for revenge is further revitalized when her heart is freed. Driven to fulfill it in spite of her saviors' efforts, she tries to attack the coalition a second time. Upon her defeat, she regretfully keeps her revenge in check as she joins the coalition.

Wang Yi is the star of the downloadable stage, "Reclusive Beauty". Accompanied by Kai, Kunoichi, and Sima Yi, she fights several couples and sees how they work together with each other.

In Ultimate, she goes back to loyally serving Wei and helps resist Ma Chao's forces when they are deceived into attacking Cao Cao at Tedorigawa.

Wang Yi is among Cao Pi's faction in Warriors Orochi 4, where she enjoys meeting Ma Chao multiple times on the opposing side. Despite Cao Pi's true wishes to aid the other humans in defeating Zeus, Wang Yi defies orders at Kawanakajima, and wishes to continue fighting Ma Chao. After she is defeated, Nuwa informs her that even if she does kill Ma Chao, she will never have any memory of doing so when she returns to her world and will still be plagued by nightmares. Listening to reason, Wang Yi finally lays down her arms and joins the Coalition.

She later accompanies Kai in visiting the Wuzhang Plains to procure ingredients for the maiden to use. Their arrival in the area eventually leads to them finding Xu Zhu and recruiting him.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms[]

Introduced in the eleventh instalment of the series, Wang Yi is characterised as a female officer adept in most matters. Consistently portrayed as possessing a good Intelligence stat landing in the low 80's while her Politics and Charisma ranked in the 60's to 70's, the eleventh instalment initially conferred her poor marks in War and average capabilities in Leadership with them landing in the 20's and 50's respectively. With the twelfth instalment, her Leadership and War were dramatically increased with the prior landing at a good 72 while the latter is now competent at the 50's range. These statistics render Wang Yi one of the most versatile female officers of the era be it for leading troops at the front, supporting allied units from the back or handling domestic affairs. While antagonistic and unwilling to serve Ma Chao, her tendency to appear as a free officer at Tianshui often results in her serving as a member of Ma Teng's army in a significant capacity owing to most of his faction's lacking capabilities in domestic affairs. Otherwise, she is a member of Cao Cao's faction once all of Liang Province is subjugated.

The thirteenth title includes an event where bandits invade the palace she is living in and, while the soldiers tell her to escape, she refuses and demands a bow to shoot the bandits with while distributing her jewellery among the soldiers of the city to boost their morale.

100man-nin no Sangokushi has a historical episode event starring her family's defense of Ji Castle. A forthright and honest warrior for Wei, she rallies the men by giving away her accessories and single-handedly defeating any who approach the castle –including Ma Chao, his generals, his wife and his younger sister– with her archery. Her bravery leaves Ma Chao's army awestruck and inspires the men to endure for Cao Cao's reinforcements. Wang Yi convinces Zhao Yue to safely return home to his father and for Yang Fu to keep fighting for the defense early within the conflict. They are concerned for her safety, imploring for their lady to not overexert herself in battle. She fights well until Yang Fu caves into Ma Chao's plot and surrenders, leaving their position vulnerable to their foe. Wang Yi and company are later rescued by Xiahou Yuan.

In Ma Yunlu's character episode, she is depicted to be a clever tactician over a warrior. She claims to fight for honor, yet her mind has been mad with grief years before the battle at Ji Castle. Wang Yi will never forgive the death of her own son. She has been deranged into thinking that a child's life is a small price to pay for survival. Ma Yunlu doesn't become completely aware of her darker character until after Wang Yi murders Yangshi and her child.

Wang Yi's Shin Sangoku Musou 15th Anniversary artwork.

Development[]

According to the Warriors Orochi 3 databook, Wang Yi's mantle was inspired by the cape worn by Spawn.

Personality[]

Gleefully sadistic in her thirst for vengeance, Wang Yi is a bloodthirsty warrior who enjoys slaughtering her foes in the field. Obsessed with eliminating Ma Chao, she is satisfied that her allegiance allows her several chances to defeat him. Her personal agenda means everything to her, as she hasn't thought of another future for herself. While it pains her to do so, Wang Yi can set aside her desires to be a capable general. A bit of a perfectionist, she desires to be punctual and thorough in her endeavors. Soldiers in camp dialogues mention that Wang Yi used to be cheerful and laid-back, prior to her thirst for vengeance.

Her limited appearance suggests that Sima Yi respects her efforts, her talents, and her undivided passion to humiliate her nemesis. She is one of the few people who can see through him and converse with him on equal ground. For her Warriors Orochi appearance, she shares an affinity with Sima Yi, , Oichi, and Ma Chao. The women sympathize with her feelings regarding her desire; Nō is amused and fascinated while Oichi pities Wang Yi and seeks to alleviate her sorrow. The fourth installment later extends this to Kai, who wishes to help alleviate the woman's sorrow with her cooking, and Kojirō, who offers to cut Ma Chao down for her.

She disdainfully labels Ma Chao "The Demon of Xiliang" ("Death God of Xiliang" in Asian scripts), her lively appearance surprising the general. In spite of her vocal hatred for him, she views him as an object of her morbid affection. Ma Dai, a possible person on her list of targets, remarks that she's a little different than how he remembered her.

『真・三國無双8』王異アクション動画

Keys: Square Flow Attack • Triangle Reactive Attack • Circle Musou X Jump/Mount

Wang Yi is affiliated with the wheels and emei piercers in this title. When equipped with them, Wang Yi can perform the following unique attacks listed below.

Unique Attacks
Unique Flow Attack Finisher (Wheels): Enemy Downed + Square Square Square Square: Runs towards a nearby foe and spin slashes them while crouching, leaving behind multiple slash trails to eviscerate more enemies along the way. Partially derived from Wang Yi's second EX attack in the previous installment.
Unique Flow Attack Finisher (Emei Piercers): Enemy Standing + Square Square Square Square: Stabs a nearby foe's neck with one piercer, then rotates around their body in mid-air before somersaulting over them to perform a dropping cross swipe. Based on the emei piercer moveset's third charge attack from the eighth title.
Unique Trigger Attack (Wheels): R1 + X: Rolls into the air and strikes the ground with both wheels to knock down foes in front of Wang Yi. Borrows motions from the trishula moveset's fourth charge attack in previous games.
Unique Trigger Attack (Emei Piercers): R1 + X: Uses right emei piercer to stab nearby foe. Quick to use, though its narrow range limits its effectiveness. Based on the emei piercer moveset's first charge attack from the eighth title.
Special Technique: R1 + Circle: Rushes forward and swings both wheels back and forth, creating multiple dark red lines that inflict slash-based damage on foes impeding Wang Yi's way. Based on her first EX attack in the previous two games.
Musou Attack: Circle: Quickly tosses both wheels forward in a crossed motion repeatedly while making brisk but steady steps each time. Wang Yi then tosses her weapons like boomerangs in diverging directions before grabbing them back in time to do a leaping strike that creates multiple thin red lines traveling in different angles around her. Both the wheel toss and red streaks inflict slash damage.
Aerial Musou Attack: X Circle: Leaps over a group of enemies and surprises them with a sweeping slice while sliding on the ground. Has elements of Wang Yi's Destructive Fangs Musou, though this incarnation of the move can now cause slash-based damage.
Horse Maneuvers
Summon Horse: L2: Summon horse to the battlefield. Holding L2 as the horse approaches will allow the character to automatically mount them.
Auto-Run: Riding Mode + L2: Automatically runs towards a specified destination. If a destination has not been set, the horse will instead run towards the location of the player's currently selected mission.
Sprint: Riding Mode + Direction + R1: Causes horse to run at a faster pace. Doing so depletes their stamina each time.
Jump: Riding Mode + Direction + R2: Causes horse to jump high while running.
Horse Fast Attack: Riding Mode + Square: Performs a fast and seamless attack while mounted. The attack itself varies depending on what type of weapon is equipped and whether the enemy is grounded or airborne.
Horse Trigger Attack: Riding Mode + Triangle: Performs an attack that sends enemies flying into the air. May vary depending on what type of weapon is equipped.
Horse Musou Attack: Riding Mode + Circle: Causes horse to sprint by consuming Musou instead of stamina.
Dismount Horse: Riding Mode + X: Dismounts from horse and resumes default fighting stance.
Bow Maneuvers
Shooting Mode: 🡻: Pulls out bow and assumes archery stance. Can be cancelled by tapping 🡻 again.
Switch Arrows: 🡸 or 🡺: Switches between different types of arrows.
Bow Attack: Shooting Mode + Square: Fires current arrow at a target. Can lock on targets by tapping R3.
Lower Bow: Shooting Mode + X: Lowers bow while squatting down.

Dynasty Warriors 8[]

Wang Yi still uses the trishula as her default weapon in this title. But starting in Dynasty Warriors 8: Empires, her new weapon of choice is the emei piercers.

Historical Information[]

Wang Yi, a member of the Wang family, was Zhao Ang's wife and gave birth to three sons and a daughter named Zhao Ying. She remained in the west during Liang Shuang's new post at Qiang Dao, protecting the area. When her sons were killed in a revolt, Wang Yi killed herself. She considered leaving her six-year-old daughter behind, fearing people would ignore her. She fasted, stayed hidden, and rubbed excrement on her clothing and face for a year. When Liang Shuang reconciled with governmental powers, Wang Yi and her daughter were ordered to be reunited with Zhao Ang. As they awaited their destination, Wang Yi spoke to her daughter, expressing her desire to leave the area and join the mothers of the Illustrious Jiang. She drank a toxic potion, which was detoxified by public officials, and she was treated immediately. Despite the pain, Wang Yi recovered and returned to her homeland.

Sometime in the years 196~220, Zhao Ang was given control of Ji Castle. In 213, Ma Chao and his army rioted in Liang Province and attacked. Of her own volition, Wang Yi armed herself with a bow and arrow and shot at Ma Chao's troops. As she fought beside her husband, she also handed out her rings and embroidered clothing as gifts for their men. Ally morale soared due to her bravery.

The castle residents were suffering from hunger due to Ma Chao's extreme siege, which was initially Cao Cao's fault for Xiliang's revolt. Wang Yi, a neighboring official, suggested peace talks with Ma Chao, but Zhao Ang was skeptical. Wang Yi suggested that the forces in Hanzhong had not returned yet, and that their situation could change with patience. However, when Zhao Ang returned, Wei Kang had already started peace talks. Ma Chao's promise for peace was not sincere, as Wei Kang was killed soon after. He captured Zhao Ang's chosen heir, Zhao Yue, and sent him towards Nanzheng, trying to force Zhao Ang to comply. Lady Yang, Ma Chao's wife, was curious about Wang Yi's reputation and invited him to convince her to believe in her husband. Wang Yi retorted that Xiliang's cavalry was essential for meeting the needs of the central plains, and Lady Yang was impressed by Wang Yi's character and loyalty.

Despite whatever Ma Chao thought of Zhao Ang, Zhao Ang stayed true to his duty and planned with his comrades to attack Ma Chao. They agreed to face Ma Chao's several thousands of troops within the month. Even so, he still worried about their son being held hostage and asked his wife about her thoughts on the matter. She assured him to focus on his enemy. "What does the loss of one child mean in this important endeavor? Not even Kongzi or Yan Hui lived one hundred years during their lifetimes." Inspired by his wife's words, he wholeheartedly agreed to the attack. She joined him as he and the other generals fought Ma Chao.

Zhao Ang pursued Ma Chao as he fled to Hanzhong. Heavily surrounded and outnumbered, Zhao Ang decided to build a station at Qishan. It is written that he fought against Ma Chao's forces nine times. Wang Yi is said to have assisted him during this time. They continued to repel Ma Chao's coalition until reinforcements arrived thirty days later. The husband and wife were freed from bombardment as their enemy withdrew. Around this time, Zhao Ang's heir was executed by Ma Chao. Wang Yi has no further mentions in historical texts.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms[]

She briefly appears in Romance of the Three Kingdoms under the name Lady Wang (王氏). The narrative depicts Zhao Yue as a member of Ma Chao's army. Wei Kang, Zhao Ang's lord, was killed by Ma Chao and the retainer wanted to avenge him. However, his son's presence caused him to pause so he consulted his wife about the situation. Lady Wang scolded him for his hesitation and insisted that he stay true to his obligations to avenge his lord. She threatened to kill herself if Zhao Ang stalled the attack due to his son.

Ma Chao later sought revenge for his losses, angrily massacring several men, women, and children in the area. Lady Wang was the lone survivor since she was with her husband.
