Yan Pu (onyomi: En Ho) is one of Zhang Lu's strategists. When Cao Cao invaded Hanzhong, Yan Pu gave Zhang Lu certain steps to follow in order to gain Cao Cao's favor when they surrender, all of which rang true. In the novel, he advises his lord to use Pang De in order to resist Cao Cao, and attempted to debunk the rumors spread by Yang Song.

Role in Games[]

In Dynasty Warriors 5: Xtreme Legends, Yan Pu is a sub-officer of Zhang Lu, and helps attempt to guard the first level of Yang Ping Gate.

In Dynasty Warriors 7, Yan Pu appears as an enemy officer in the Battle of Yangping Gate. The player must defeat him in order to seize the opposing faction's supply depot.

His Romance of the Three Kingdoms counterpart has high stats for intelligence and politics, but is ill-suited for anything involving warfare and leadership.

Historical Information[]

Born in Yi Province, Yan Pu was instrumental in Zhang Lu's survival against the coming onslaught of Cao Cao's forces. When his lord received a jeweled seal from the people, he prudently advised him not to declare himself king for fear of attracting the ire of the other warlords.

In the year 215, Cao Cao finally reached Hanzhong. Zhang Lu had no desire to resist the encroaching army, so Yan Pu convinced him to move to his fortress Bazhong in an effort to improve their position to surrender. Their act of leaving behind Zhang Lu's wealth impressed Cao Cao enough to welcome them into his services. For his part, Yan Pu was granted the title of marquis.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms[]

Romance of the Three Kingdoms introduces Yan Pu in Chapter 59 where he encouraged his lord to prepare for Cao Cao's attack by raising an army together with Zhang Wei. His well-meaning advice conflicted with Yang Song's self-serving suggestions who slandered Pang De for his own ends. Yan Pu recognized Pang De's potential to face Cao Cao and warned his lord not to execute him on false premises.
