Zhang Ying (onyomi: Chō Ei) is one of Liu Yao's military officers. Very little is known about him historically. He was one of the generals who is mentioned to have repelled his lord's neighboring rivals, such as Wu Jing and Sun Ben, numerous times. When these lords colluded with Sun Ce, Zhang Ying and his allies lost their ground. Although he disappears from historical records, Zhang Ying has a different role in the games and the novel.

Role in Games

In the Dynasty Warriors series, Zhang Ying often appears as an enemy officer during Sun Ce's conquest of the Wu Territory. The fifth title has him play a role in luring Sun Quan into a trap at the eastern side of the battlefield.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms

The novel portrays Zhang Ying as a bold but brash officer loyal to Liu Yao. He bragged that the defenses of his forces were impenetrable. Both he and Taishi Ci volunteered to lead the defense of Yangzhou against the invading armies of Sun Ce, but only Zhang Ying was chosen. His camp was set ablaze by Zhou Tai and Jiang Qin, leading to his swift defeat. Incensed by Zhang Ying's failure, Liu Yao would have sentenced him to death if not for his advisors urging clemency on the general's behalf.

He was stationed at Lingling. Once he received news of Liu Yao's retreat, Zhang Ying immediately abandoned the city for Moling. He and Moling's protector, Xue Li, defended themselves from the invaders until Sun Ce's ploy lured them out of the city's gates. While his men were willing to surrender in the wake of their defeat, Zhang Ying attempted to flee. He was killed by Chen Wu.
