Zill O'll (ジルオール) is a 3D role-playing video game and one of Koei's most successful IPs for the genre. The game's appeal over other titles of its time is its free-scenario system. The game's title is an acronym for "Zillion of Wills". It hasn't been localized, although its action-RPG prequel has been shipped overseas.

The original Zill O'll was released again for the PlayStation 2 under the title Zill O'll ~infinite~. Aside from a graphical and audio overhaul and a few small changes, the original game remains largely intact. The PlayStation 2 version had a Premium Box edition which included a visual book, a calendar with 13 character illustrations, and 15 character post cards. The limited bonus for early consumers was a set of art cards.

The PSP re-release Zill O'll infinite plus includes several additions to differentiate itself from the original title.

Series character designs are done by Jun Suemi. Music for the original Zill O'll was done by Akihiko Teruta, Chinatsu Okuyasu, and Tsutomu Hirasawa. infinite music was composed by Hiromi Tazutani.

Setting[]

In 1200, adventurers roam the vast Vyashion continent, aspiring to emulate legendary figures. Despite a return to serenity, the land remains plagued by monsters and political turmoil. A prophecy predicts the Dragon King of lore will rise, ending the world.

Gameplay[]

The game follows a basic RPG system with character strength measured by levels and skill points. Players can learn skills from acquired skills and have a job class, which can be changed with Soul points. Consumable items are encouraged for repeated purchases. Equipment can be customized with steel shards found in dungeons, and armor can be changed to increase protective properties. The main character can change their appearance and fighting style freely, while the rest of the cast has set preferences. A treasure chest with a gambling option is available for low gea players.

The player can direct their main party's movements in predetermined routes over a flat world map ala Final Fantasy Tactics. Travel is measured by a period of days. While time is chronicled for the player's convenience, there is no definitive timelimit for completing the game.

Story[]

The player creates their protagonist at the start of each game, with different traits and origin stories. They start their adventure as adventurers, investigating Felidae Manor and earning experience, skill points, and Soul Points. The story is divided into main story and character events, with the main story focusing on the mysterious Weapons of Darkness and Nemea's adventures. Players can recruit 24 characters into the main party, with relationships influencing the game's main scenario and ending.

The original Zill O'll has 24 different endings. infinite has a total of 48 different endings in the game, many of which can only be unlocked based on the protagonist's gender. infinite has a new game plus feature is included for players who beat the game once and save their data.

Quests[]

The protagonist must build their reputation and stats by fulfilling quests in towns with Guilds. Completing quests earns Soul points, with a maximum of three simultaneous acceptances. Quests have numbered difficulty ratings and time limits, rewarding players with Soul Points, experience, and gea. Each quest has a specific theme.

  • Delivery (配達) - deliver goods, the easiest to complete. Visit the designated guild listed within the quest description.
  • Escort (護衛) - guide a NPC to their location. Monsters will be momentarily stronger in the paths closest to their destination. The original Zill O'll forced the NPC to fight battles; if they died in battle, the quest was an automatic failure. infinite removes this feature.
  • Discovery (探索) - search for a rare item within the designated dungeon. Once it is found, the player needs to bring it back to the guild master.
  • Slay (退治) - exterminate a monster within the dungeon listed in the quest description and report back to the guildmaster. Optional boss fights to test the main party.
  • Rescue (救出) - look for a missing person lost within a dungeon and escort them back to their home. The guildmaster will offer this quest if the player has raised enough reputation in the area.

Quests unlock new dungeons and introduce harder monsters. Treasure chests grant rare treasures, but only dexterity-rated characters can open them. Failure to disarm the trap results in damaging consequences.

Battle[]

Combat is completely turn based; the order of attack is determined by a character's Agility stat. Actions are selected in a menu driven layout. The protagonist can have a total of three characters assist him/her in battle. An extra slot is reserved for guest characters.

The chart lists the elemental properties within the game:

Element Strong against Weak against
Fire Water Wind
Water Earth Fire
Earth Wind Water
Wind Fire Earth
Holy All Darkness
Darkness All Holy

Characters can level up their elemental stats after victories, increasing their tolerance and attack strength. The game has a "Fast Break" bonus system, allowing quick battles and triggering double or triple actions. Random encounters are not present, and protagonists can avoid monsters except during battles. To enter the main tournament, players must participate in a qualifying tournament and face 8 solo matches. If victorious, they win gea.
